Just in case you missed out on the big news, the earth shook this past weekend at PAX Prime, where Wizards of the Coast revealed via Twitter that the Onslaught fetchland cards will indeed be reprinted in upcoming Magic the Gathering set release Khans of Tarkir.
Each card features brand new art and the new card face and font.

In case you missed it, earlier this month during Pro Tour Magic 2015, Wizards of the Coast – publishers of the popular card game Magic the Gathering – released the schedule of their 2014-2015 Premier Organized Play schedule, which includes the Magic the Gathering Pro Tour and Grand Prix events. However, this announcement caused quite a stir when it was relvealed that the format for each of the Pro Tour events next year would include only the “Standard Constructed” and “Booster Draft” formats.
Fans took to social media and reddit to complain in droves, most often stating that this is the “death of the ‘Modern’ format.”
Well, Wizards of the Coast must be listening to their passionate fan base. Last night, Director of Organized Play Helen Bergeot released a statement that the increasingly popular “Modern Constructed” format would indeed be showcased at the Magic the Gathering Pro Tour in 2015, as well as the addition of changing Grand Prix Vancouver to Modern as well.
Here is her statement, in it’s entirety:
“During Pro Tour Magic 2015, on August 2, we announced the schedule, locations, and formats for the 2015 Pro Tours. The Constructed format for all Pro Tours in that announcement was Standard.
Since then, we have received comments and concerns from the Magic community regarding this announcement, and the omission of Modern from the 2015 Pro Tour schedule. After evaluating all feedback and after further discussion, we have decided to add Modern to the 2015 Pro Tour schedule.
The Pro Tour in Washington D.C., which will take place from February 6–8 in 2015, will feature Modern Constructed and Booster Draft as the tournament’s formats. This is a change from the previous schedule announcement of Standard and Booster Draft.
In addition, the format for Grand Prix Vancouver, taking place February 21–22 in 2015, will be changed from Limited to Modern.
In order to address the community’s questions regarding this change and other changes related to the direction of Magic, its formats, and Organized Play, we will also be hosting a CoverItLive chat session on Tuesday, August 26, where Director of Global Brand Marketing Mark Purvis, Senior Director of R&D Aaron Forsythe, and I will answer the community’s questions. We will have more details—including the time for when this CoverItLive chat session will take place—later this month.
As always, we appreciate the feedback that you have provided us regarding recent announcements, and we will address the community’s questions accordingly.

Wizards of the Coast announced yesterday sweeping changes to the Magic the Gathering organized play program as a result of unprecedented growth in both it’s Grand Prix program and Pro Tour Qualifier programs. Based upon feedback from the community at large, including judges, players, and local-game-store’s alike, the following changes were announced:
Pro Points at Pro Tour’s will now be awarded based upon final match point score instead of final swiss standing beyond the top eight;
Pro Points at Grand Prix events will likewise now be awarded based upon final match point score beyond the top eight;
Players at the Pro Tour finishing with 33 match points or more will receive an invitation and airfare to the next Pro Tour;
Minor changes to the threshold needed to reach Platinum Pro-level status;
Gold Pro-level no longer awards a $500.00 appearance fee. Instead, Gold Pro-level now awards airfare to all Pro Tours for the season.
What do you think of these sweeping changes? Is this better for the Magic the Gathering organized play program or worse? Tell us what you think of the new changes effective beginning in August in the comments below!

Popular hobby industry new website ICv2.com reported yesterday that Wizards of the Coast announced plans to release Basic D&D as a free PDF downloadable from its website in July, coinciding with the release of the D&D Starter Set.
In an article on their website, Mike Mearls, senior manager for the Dungeons & Dragons research and design team, outlined the material that would be included in the Basic D&D download, comparing it to the D&D Rules Cyclopedia of previous editions, but without as much detail. “We want to put D&D in as many hands as possible, and a free, digital file is the best way to do that.”
The release will cover the basic core of the game, including material needed to create characters and advance to 20th level. It will cover basic classes (cleric, fighter, rogue, wizard) and essential subclasses, as well as basic race options (dwarf, elf, halfling, human). The introduction is positioned to steer players toward purchasing more extensive material in the Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master’s Guide. But, Mearls also states, “Basic D&D is the true heart of the game and could easily provide a lifetime of gaming.”
When the Player’s Handbook releases in August, Basic D&D will expand to include essential monsters, magic items and DM rules to run the game, as well as rules for different settings (wilderness, dungeon, urban). When storylines like Tyranny of Dragons launch, Wizards will make new PDF’s available that provide the rules and stats to run the adventures tied to the story. This way, Mearls says, players are not required to purchase any of the core rulebooks or the Starter Set to participate in adventures.
The free distribution of rules is another example of WotC’s strategy of free sampling to get people involved in the new Dungeons and Dragons; the company is also making the first part of the adventures in its D&D Encounters organized play storyline events free.
Everyone is aware by now that at this year’s Grand Prix Paris, won by Javier Dominguez playing a Blue/Black/Green Legacy deck, came under review due to numerous issues that occurred during the event (see “UPDATE: Grand Prix Paris Standings Under Review“). Even though there was a disqualification after the last round of the swiss that put popular Brazilian professional Magic player Paulo Vitor Damo de Rosa into the top eight, perhaps the most notorious “cheat” is the “Brainstorm heard round the world,” in which eventual champion Mr. Dominguez only returned one card to the top of his deck after casting a Brainstorm during his turn – all on camera!
“Two situations arose at Grand Prix Paris that have raised some questions on social media. While we don’t discuss ongoing investigations, or the underlying causes leading to a Disqualification, here is some explanation of the policies behind these two situations.
Head Judge Riccardo Tessitori conducted an investigation of Gerardo Jurado Gibert during round 13 of Grand Prix Paris after a suspicious Game Rule Violation. After listening to all involved parties (Jurado Gibert, his opponent and the Floor Judge), he did not feel that he had sufficient information to assess a Disqualification at that time and, in the interests of keeping the tournament moving, allowed the player to continue playing. As more information came to light during further interviews, and consultation with other senior judges present, Head Judge Tessitori was convinced that the actions taken during the Game Rule Violation were intentional and issued the appropriate Unsporting Conduct – Cheating infraction. As Tessitori stated: “The fact that two rounds had passed and the fact that the player made Top 8 shouldn’t be good reasons to keep in the tournament a player who I was now sure had cheated.” Following the appropriate course of action in such a situation, since Jurado Gibert had already finished his match, the result for round 15 stood and Jurado Gibert was therefore disqualified after round 15 and before the Quarter Finals. As defined in policy, since the cut to top 8 had not yet been made, Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa, who ended up 9th in the standings prior to Gibert’s removal from the tournament, advanced to the Top 8.
During an on-camera match in the quarterfinals, Javier Dominguez played Brainstorm and only returned one card to the top of his library when resolving it. After investigating the issue and discussing it with the player, Head Judge Tessitori and the Investigations Committee have concluded that the error was accidental. The infraction has been noted in Dominguez’ penalty history. Since the error was not noticed during the game and Cheating has been ruled out in this situation, the Grand Prix result will stand as is.”
So, Mr. Dominguez will retain his title. What do you think? Watch the video below and let us know in the comments below.
