‘Smash Up: Monster Smash’ Expansion Announced

According to retailer news website ICv2.com, Alderac Entertainment Group was previewing the upcoming addition to its hit Smash Up card game line at ACD Game Day last week.  Smash Up: Monster Smash is planned for September release.

New Kickstarter Board Game ‘Dogs of War’ Coming in Q4

At ACD Games Day – an annual event held by ACD Distribution, owned by Hall of Fame Magic the Gathering player Bob Maher Jr., CoolMiniOrNot shared details about the planned release of Dogs of War, a new European-style board game they will release in the fourth quarter, according to retailer news website ICv2.com.

Designed by Paolo Mori (Libertalia, Augustus), Dogs of War is a game of intrigue and backstabbing, set in a steampunk Renaissance universe.  Players take the role of captains of private armies, deployed in favor of rival noble houses.  Players use their Dog of War to help them win influence, battles and if needed, betray the house they’ve sworn allegiance to.  The goal is not pure military power, but rather to amass power by getting rewards from houses, amassing gold and troops, and gaining influence with the most successful houses.

The box will contain 30 plastic busts of the 5 Dogs of War and their player screens, 50 soldier cards (4 types), 32 tactical cards, 72 house influence tokens (for 6 houses), 36 coins, 60 victory point tokens,  and a configurable tile-based game board.  The game is for 3 -5 players.

The game was funded on Kickstarter at the beginning of May, and raised $66,703 from 1,139 backers ($58.56/backer).

Popular Geek & Sundry Sensation ‘TableTop’ to Produce RPG Show

tabletop

Popular hobby retailer news website ICv2.com reported yesterday that YouTube sensation TableTop will launch an RPG spin-off series, after raising $1,414,154 on crowdfunding website Indiegogo.com.  The successful fund raise will also fund a 20-episode Season 3 of the series, which airs on the Geek & Sundry YouTube channel.

Funding for the 36 day campaign ended on Saturday, with 22,210 backers pledging ($63.67 average per backer).  In addition to the promised 20-episode TableTop season, the campaign also blew past the promised bonus goal of a spin-off RPG series at the $1 million mark.  Backers continued to pledge to receive perk items from companies including Cards Against Humanity, Days of Wonder and Loot Crate.  Game designers Mike Selinker and James Ernest also will be designing a downloadable TableTop: The TableTop Game for backers.

A post-campaign update touted two records that it broke:  most funded digital series on any crowdfunding site, and most funded campaign in a day (for Indiegogo), with $261,000 pledged on the first campaign day  (which also happened to be International TableTop Day).

The campaign, had it been on Kickstarter (and actually been a physical release), would have earned TableTop the #9 spot on our recently updated Top 10 Tabletop Game Kickstarters chart.

In a post-campaign video, host Wil Wheaton thanked all backers and promised that Season Three would debut later this year, with the RPG spinoff arriving early next year.  The RPG show was described in the video as “in the TableTop style” with Wil and friends playing a season-long RPG campaign.  The series “will follow a group of players and their characters through multiple levels, challenges, and possible character deaths as an entire campaign is played out over the course of a year.”

ICv2: ‘DungeonQuest Revised Edition’ Coming in July

According to retailer news website ICV2.com, Fantasy Flight Games will release the board game DungeonQuest Revised Edition in July.

The fast-paced dungeon exploration game is set in Dragonfire Dungeon.  There have been several editions released over the years, but the basic premise of collect treasure, evade traps, and fight monsters while negotiating the catacombs to escape the dungeon is the same.

This new edition has updated and retooled elements of the game to make it even more dangerous, including revamped rules, heroes and monsters.  Fantasy Flight also worked with Jakob Bonds, the original designer of the game, to develop the new edition’s combat system, which is a return to the classic edition’s style.  There is also a new Torchlight variant that allows players to create a larger, more complex dungeon.

The game is for 1-4 players, ages 14 and up, and plays in 60 minutes.

Check out this super-sweet board game when it comes into Battleground Games & Hobbies upon it’s release. Don’t miss it!

Fantasy Flight Games Announces ‘Dark Heresy 2nd Edition’

Fantasy Flight Games has released more details about the upcoming release of Dark Heresy Second Edition.  This updated version of its rolep-laying game set in the grim dystopian future of the Warhammer 40,000 universe is scheduled to release in the third quarter of 2014.

Like the previous edition, this new version casts the players in the role of “acolytes” who serve a mysterious and powerful Inquisitor.  The acolytes are tasked with uncovering and investigating plots in a secret war against the Imperium.  The Second Edition introduces a new sector of the Imperium, called the “Askellon Sector,” providing an entirely new area of mystery and conspiracy for fans of the game as well as continuing to flesh out the ever-growing Warhammer 40,000 setting.

The 448-page, full-color hardcover rulebook includes complete rules for stand-alone adventures and on-going campaigns, a short introductory story written by Dan Abnett (Guant’s Ghost series), background information about the Askellon Sector and the Imperium of Man, and an introductory adventure, Dark Pursuits.

The new edition was developed based on feedback from the earlier edition’s thousands of fans, including a public beta program run by Fantasy Flight in 2013.  Rules changes include new player classes, integrated vehicle combat rules, a streamlined character creation system, and an NPC “threat rating” system to help gamemasters design encounters.

Dark Heresy Second Edition  will be supported by the release of a Dark Heresy Second Edition Game Master’s Kit, also scheduled to release in the third quarter with a suggested retail price of $24.95.
