Funforge, which is distributed by Passport Games in North America, will release the new cooperative board game Samurai Spirit, which will have a preview at Gen Con, according to hobby news website ICv2.com.
Designed by Antoine Bauza (7 Wonders, Hanabi), players take the roles of members of a samurai squad cooperatively defending a farming village from bandits. Each samurai has a unique beast essence which is invoked as fighting intensifies, but that quality also bring the samurai closer to death while increasing their power. Over the course of three turns, players must decide if they will battle bandits, defend the village, or help other samurai. In the end, the village must have at least one undamaged farm with enough farmers to tend it for players to win.
MSRP and trade release for North America information were not announced. Funforge and Passport will preview the game at Gen Con.

Z-Man Games has announced, according to hobby news website ICv2.com, a new addition to its popular disease-fighting Pandemic line of strategy games, Pandemic: Legacy.
The original Pandemic was designed by Matt Leacock, and this version is co-designed by Rob Daviau, who designed Risk Legacy. Pandemic Legacy will incorporate the evolving history and consequences of current games into future ones, much like role playing games. Characters and their actions in the current game play will affect how future games are played.
A Z-Man Games representative confirmed Pandemic: Legacy will not be released until 2015.
Other imminent upcoming releases in the Pandemic line include Pandemic: Contagion, in which players are the diseases, which will release at Gen Con; and the dice-based stand-alone Pandemic: The Cure, which is due in Q4.

Reported by hobby news website ICv2.com late last week, Fantasy Flight Games has announced the latest Lieutenant Pack for its Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) semi-cooperative fantasy board game. The Lieutenant Packs for Descent: Journeys in the Dark bring new life to the Overlord’s most powerful agents, while also providing an additional level of strategic depth to the gameplay. The Skarn Lieutenant Pack, which is not a stand-alone game, requires a copy of Descent: Journeys in the Dark (2nd Edition) to play, but in the context of the game, it unleashes massive new powers. The Skarn is a magical construct infused with life by the death of a high mage, and it possesses the ability to increase its size and strength endlessly by incorporating pieces of its environment. If left unchecked, The Skarn has the potential to threaten all of Terrinoth with its enormity.
The new Skarn Lieutenant Pack brings one of the Overlord’s most feared minions to life with a detailed and dramatically sculpted figure that players can use to replace the lieutenant taken from the Manor of Ravens expansion.
The Skarn Lieutenant Pack also contains a ten-card plot deck, “Twisted Soul,” which can impart some of Skarn’s potent defenses to a player’s other monsters. The Plot Deck also invites overlords to harness the Skarn’s brute power and regenerative nature in any campaign.
The Skarn Lieutenant Packincludes one highly detailed plastic Skarn figure, 2 Agent Cards, 10 Plot Cards, 16 Threat & Fortune Tokens, and a rulesheet.

Days of Wonder has announced, according to hobby news website ICv2.com, a September release for Five Tribes, a new Euro-style big box board game designed by Bruno Cathala (Senji, Dice Town). Five Tribes builds on the long tradition of German games with wooden Meeples and provides a unique twist on the standard “worker placement” economic board game. A bit more of a “gamer’s game” than the typical Days of Wonder fare, Five Tribes has clear, easy-to-understand rules, but requires a clever and calculated strategy to win.
In this “worker displacement” game players score points by carefully maneuvering the Five Tribes of Meeples over the tiles that make up the ancient Sultanate of Naqula. They need to look ahead to what moves will not only position them to score, but also put their opponents at a disadvantage. It’s when, how, and where players “dis-place” the five tribes of Assassins, Elders, Builders, Merchants, and Viziers that determines victory or defeat.
Designer Bruno Cathala, who Days of Wonder is bringing to GenCon to demo the game, explained his affection for the game: “After designing a series of smaller games, my inner-self began to insist that I work on something bigger and more substantial. While I’ve already played the prototype hundreds of times, it’s still the game I want to play most often. So please don’t hesitate to come to play with me at festivals–I never grow tired of Five Tribes.”
Five Tribes is for 2 to 4 players, ages 13 and older and takes approximately 40-80 minutes to play. It includes 30 Tiles depicting the Sultanate of Naqala; 4 Player sets with Camels and Turn Markers; 90 Wooden Meeples (Yellow Viziers, Red Assassins, Green Merchants, Blue Builders and White Elders); 12 Palm Trees & 10 Palaces; 22 Djinn cards; 54 Resource cards; 96 Victory Coins; a Scoring Pad; 5 Djinn & Turn Order Summary Sheets; 1 Betting Order & 1 Turn Order Tracks; and a Rules Booklet.

Reported late last week via ICv2.com, Fantasy Flight Games is preparing the Blood Bowl: Team Manager Foul Play Expansion for a Q3, 2014 release. Foul Play is a lowdown, cheating expansion that adds three new teams from the Putrid Players Guild in a new subdivision of the Team Managers’ Union. The newcomers include the disease-spreading Nurgle’s Rotters, the anarchic Chaos Dwarves of the Zharr-Naggrund Ziggurats, and the cheating Goblins of The Lowdown Rats.
Another addition to the BBTM game provided by the Foul Play Expansion is the introduction of stadiums, which provide the right treacherous environment for this most corrupt of all sports. Venues like the Nehekara Death Dome, The Ogham Stonefield, and Castle Waldenhof, not only present entirely different playing surfaces, but also different rules, since certain skills are outlawed in some venues.
The Foul Play Expansion comes in a colorful box that contains 10 stadium cards, 65 Bridge-size card for players and Spike/Magazine cards, 58 small cards split between Staff Upgrades, Team Upgrades, and Penalty cards, 23 cardboard tokens, and 1 rulesheet.
