According to hobby channel news website ICv2.com, Paizo Publishing will release Pathfinder Unchained, a 256-page hardcover of optional rules that change some of the fundamentals of the Pathfinder RPG, in April 2015. Among the optional rules will be redesigned barbarian, monk, rogue, and summoner classes; a new action economy; new ways of designing monsters and treasure on the fly; a new resource pool for martial characters; and a new system for modifying spells with powerful spell components.
Players can pick and choose the systems they want to change in their game, from minimal changes to a new play experience.
Could this be part of a potential “answer” to Wizards of the Coast’s brand new D&D Next?

According to hobby news website ICv2.com, in early 2015 Privateer Press plans to ratchet-up the level of violence in its fantasy RPGs with the launch Iron Kingdoms Unleashed, a self-contained, hyper-aggressive role-playing game that is set in the wilds of western Immoren (Immoren is the continent that is the setting for Privateer’s Iron Kingdoms RPG as well as its Warmachine and HORDES miniature games). Iron Kingdoms Unleashed will be both a complete game unto itself and fully compatible with the Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy Roleplaying Game, though Unleashed will have sharper, more feral edge to it.
Iron Kingdoms Unleashed will offer players a wide range choices for their fantasy surrogates ranging from Trolls, to Farrow, Gatormen, Bog Trogs, Pygmy Trolls, Nyss, humans, Warlocks, Tharn Ravengers, and more. Careers open to players include (among others) Mistspeaker, Bokar, Bonegrinders, and Monsterhunter. In addition to a large number of playable characters, Iron Kingdoms Unleashed will also include a wide range of monsters for players to do battle with in this extremely aggressive fantasy RPG in which bloody encounters look like they will be extremely frequent. Over 100 pages of the Iron Kingdoms Unleashed Core Rulebook, which is due out in early 2015 and contains all the elements necessary to play, will be devoted to detailing the powers, habits, and occasional weaknesses of the game’s many monsters.
The recently announced Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy: Monsternomicon supplement for the Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy RPG, which is due out in September, and which contains vital information on 40 different monsters, will be fully compatible with the new Iron Kingdoms Unleashed RPG.

Popular hobby industry new website ICv2.com reported yesterday that Wizards of the Coast announced plans to release Basic D&D as a free PDF downloadable from its website in July, coinciding with the release of the D&D Starter Set.
In an article on their website, Mike Mearls, senior manager for the Dungeons & Dragons research and design team, outlined the material that would be included in the Basic D&D download, comparing it to the D&D Rules Cyclopedia of previous editions, but without as much detail. “We want to put D&D in as many hands as possible, and a free, digital file is the best way to do that.”
The release will cover the basic core of the game, including material needed to create characters and advance to 20th level. It will cover basic classes (cleric, fighter, rogue, wizard) and essential subclasses, as well as basic race options (dwarf, elf, halfling, human). The introduction is positioned to steer players toward purchasing more extensive material in the Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master’s Guide. But, Mearls also states, “Basic D&D is the true heart of the game and could easily provide a lifetime of gaming.”
When the Player’s Handbook releases in August, Basic D&D will expand to include essential monsters, magic items and DM rules to run the game, as well as rules for different settings (wilderness, dungeon, urban). When storylines like Tyranny of Dragons launch, Wizards will make new PDF’s available that provide the rules and stats to run the adventures tied to the story. This way, Mearls says, players are not required to purchase any of the core rulebooks or the Starter Set to participate in adventures.
The free distribution of rules is another example of WotC’s strategy of free sampling to get people involved in the new Dungeons and Dragons; the company is also making the first part of the adventures in its D&D Encounters organized play storyline events free.
For more information on the upcoming D&D releases and organized play, see “Wizards of the Coast Announces Changes to D&D OP.“

Wizards of the Coast announced last week the highly anticipated product line-up for the Dungeons & Dragons Tyranny of Dragons campaign, ushering in a pivotal year for the popular role-playing game brand. The entertainment offerings include the D&D Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual and Dungeon Master’s Guide that bring the campaign storyline to life for tabletop RPG gamers, as well as digital offerings led by a new module for the Neverwinter MMO.
To celebrate 40 years of entertaining players and to coincide with the Tyranny of Dragons product line-up, Wizards of the Coast has also unveiled a new logo for the brand. The redesign includes a larger ampersand that is clearly a fire-breathing dragon, conveying an element of danger with its sharp edges and barbs on his tale and evoking some of the main elements that D&D stands for, including adventures and fearsome monsters.
First out of the gate for Tyranny of Dragons digital offerings will be a new module for the highly-acclaimed Dungeons & Dragons MMO, Neverwinter, from Cryptic Studios and Perfect World Entertainment. The new module, aptly titled Tyranny of Dragons, will be the premier digital Dungeons & Dragons experience for players and will launch on August 14, 2014.
For players eager to sink their teeth into the Tyranny of Dragons storyline around the gaming table, two new tabletop adventures will also release this year. Hoard of the Dragon Queen (August 19) and The Rise of Tiamat (October 21) will take players into the depths of the dragon’s lair, pitting them against Tiamat, the most fearsome dragon in D&D’s history.
In addition, Wizards has partnered with WizKids to produce a new line of D&D miniatures (see “WizKids Releases Details for ‘D&D Fantasy’ Miniatures“) that fans can use in conjunction with their Tyranny of Dragons adventures, as well as complement their tabletop RPG experience brought forth by the new rules set. With these new minis, players can expect high-quality, pre-painted plastic miniatures featuring iconic heroes and villains straight from the Forgotten Realms.
For the full Tyranny of Dragons story overview and product line-up, including PC and mobile games, tabletop roleplaying adventures, digital tools, collectible miniatures, comics, apparel and more visit DungeonsandDragons.com and stay tuned for more Tyranny of Dragons offerings and release dates to be announced in the coming months.
Best of all, Battleground Games & Hobbies will have a full line of Dungeons & Dragons Tyranny of Dragons products in stock as soon as it becomes available! Press release and information courtesy of Alfred Cloutier.
