IDW to Publish ‘X-Files’ Board Game

Late last week, news website ICv2.com reported that IDW Publishing has announced the July release of a brand new licensed big box X-Files strategy board game designed by veteran designer Kevin Wilson (Arkham Horror, Descent, Civilization).  Gallery and comic book artist mention is providing the illustrations that will be used for the game’s cover and throughout its various components.

IDW’s X-Files board game will focus on material from the first three seasons of television series, giving fans a chance to start their board game adventures from the beginning of the X-Files phenomenon, which was one of the major TV successes of the 1990s.  Players will get the chance to take on the role of Mulder, Scully, and the X-Filesteam as they work to uncover global conspiracies and threats while going up against various members of the Syndicate.

IDW acquired the license to publish X-Files comics in early 2013 .  There have been X-Files card games and trivia games issued before, but this appears to be the first true X-Files strategy board game. This is great news for die-hard X-Files fans.

Asmodee to Release ‘Dixit’ & ‘Seasons’ Expansions

Popular hobby industry news website ICv2.com reports that Asmodee plans to release expansions for Dixit and Seasons in 2014: Seasons: Path of Destiny will arrive in Q2, and Dixit: Daydreams will release in Q4.

Dixit: Daydreams won’t be released until Q4, and details are few.  The Spiel des Jahres winning  storytelling card game was designed by Jean-Louis Roubira, and Asmodee has already released three expansions and the series received a huge “TableTop Bump” after the game was featured on the first season of the show.

Seasons: Path of Destiny is the second expansion for Regis Bonnessee’s sorcerer battle game of cards and dice: Seasons.  This expansion adds new powers, enchantments and special abilities, and there will be new strategies for game play, tied to the new Die of Destiny.  The box contains 62 cards (42 Power cards, 10 Enchantment cards, 10 Replica Power cards), 30 tokens, 1 Die of Destiny and a rulebook.  The first edition printing will also include a special promo card.   As an expansion, it requires the base game to play.  The game is for 2 – 4 players, ages 14 and up, and plays in 45 minutes.  The game will release in late April or early May. Cryptozoic Entertainment Announces New ‘DC Deck Building Game’ Releases for 2014

Last week, ICv2.com reported that at Toy Fair, Cryptozoic Entertainment shared two planned additions to its DC Comics Deck-Building Game for 2014: the Crisis Expansion in June and the stand-alone Forever Evil box in October.

 

The DC Deck-Building Game: Crisis Expansion Pack 1 introduces a new cooperative element to game play.  Players must team up to overcome the challenging events when one of the 15 crisis cards comes up.  There are also “Impossible Mode” super-villain challenges which are much tougher than their lesser counterparts.  The 60-card deck also includes 14 oversized super hero cards (including several new ones), and a rules sheet. As an expansion it requires one of the base decks to play and the deck releases in June.

 

DC Comics Deck-Building Game: Forever Evil will be a larger, stand-alone product; but compatible for play with previous editions.  Game play details have not yet been released, but the concentration will be on the ‘villains,’ since the heroes are all ‘dead’ in that DC cross-over event.  The release is planned for October.

Ticket to Ride 10th Anniversary Edition

According to news website ICv2.com, Days of Wonder has announced a new version of its best selling train adventure board game, Ticket to Ride 10th Anniversary Edition, for release in June. Check it out!

 

Designed by Alan R. Moon, Ticket to Ride has sold over three million copies since it was introduced in 2004.  The new edition will be packaged in an oversize game box with new art, and includes a giant U.S. board map that is 50% larger than the original, which also features new illustrations and design.  The five sets of plastic trains will each have a different type of train car and unique paint scheme, which can be stored in tin train storage boxes unique to each rail line.  The box will also include 110 large format Train cards, 69 Destination Tickets (which include both the original US map tickets plus those from the USA 1910 expansion), and a multi-lingual rulebook.

 

The game is for 2 – 5 players, ages 8 and up, and plays in 45 minutes. If you’re a fan of this amazing game, this is a collectible you won’t want to miss out on!

Z-Man to Reprint Popular ‘Vikings’ Board Game

According to ICv2.com, Z-Man Games has announced that it will be reprinting Michael Kiesling’s classic Vikings board game.  The popular game, first published by Hans im Gluck in 2007 with an English edition from Rio Grande Games, is out-of-print in North America with good condition examples of the game going for big bucks on Ebay.  Z-Man’s edition of the Vikings board game will ship to retail in the spring of 2014.

Designed for 2-4 players, ages 10 and up,Vikings is a fast-paced economic board game that takes six rounds (about 60 minutes) to play.  Vikings is not about conquest and pillage, rather it a strategy game that rewards clever use of resources.  The unique feature of the auction and tile placement game is its pricing wheel, which gives the game several delightful levels of complexity, which can be enhanced even more using the rules of the “advanced” game.
