Well if you like any army enough you can learn how it works and have fun with it. All armies come in a starter force box that run roughly $90. One box usually is enough for about 1500 points or so.

What I'd do is come by the store and take a look at what you like and start there. Even the Basic Reach for Blackridge starter set come with basics as well. That set comes marines and orcs and enough for a low point game. Don't worry about the points for now. I'd learn how to play. Maybe try out an army or two and see what happens.
Games are often ran whenever, so watch someone play. Space Wolves did just come out with a new codex book (chapter specific rules) and some new models. There's afew Wolf players at Battlegrounds. If I wasn't stuck in classes til December I'd be stopping by my Wednsdays, but can't. Good Luck and see you around the store.

No you do not need to buy Canis for $41.  There are allot of different options for an HQ in the codex.

The $90 kit has everything you'd need, except codex. Here's the wolf one. Battlegrounds does sell them and the other ones.

All other models are extra for specific purpouses, but not necessary.

does the chaos marines have a 90 kit? if so can i just get a run down on the play styles of the armies? i wanted to maybe try the mega battle but id rather play small games and go to next years. but basically id need to buy the 90 kit, an hq guy, and the codex?

i dont think that they are 1500 points...the space marine battleforce was around 700.

The assault on black reach is an excellent deal to get you going with Space Marines or Ork (or both).  It comes with a rule book which is necessary to play the game and the basic rules to use the models supplied inside.  I ended up getting one just so I could have the extra models, mini rule book and templates.  It even comes with whipping sticks measuring sticks so you don't have to shell out for a measuring tape right away.

That being said,

It is a very big game.  Lots of cool models and fun ways to play.  Take it slow. If you had to buy one box today with knowing nothing about the game I would say assault on black reach as it will teach you the game and give you a ton of models for the game later on.

It will take some time to get up to the 1500 point mark but by that time you should have lot of little games in with people and enough time to get the rules under your belt.  Read the main rule book, digest it a little and then look at the armies and decide on the army from there.

Much like everyone else has said, the best way to go is to buy the Battleforce sets.  There are also other sets that are more expensive ($150-$250), but they come with a lot more stuff that what you pay for as well.  Some of them are called Megaforces or Strikeforces.

That said, you can find a Chaos Marine Strikeforce set from the GW site, or you can ask BG to special order it for you.  The Strike force will have over 1000 points worth of models for you to play with, and you will definitely get the most for your dollar.

However, I recommend picking up the Codex and rule book first.  Read them over at least a couple of times, before you get into the modeling and painting.  Come by the store and ask around if someone can show you how the Chaos marines work too.  Get a feel for the game before you invest heavily into it.  It's good that you have the enthusiasm to get started, but do take it slowly, as Rich (Trooper) said.  It's an expensive game, and you want to be sure you'll enjoy it before putting more money into it.

Good luck!

The GW website is a good place to get some of the background info. on your chooses as well. Knowing and liking your background helps.

wolves:

Basic game play you can stop by the store and ask if anyone would be willing to help out. I may be around this Thursday, or Friday.

Take it from me dude, you'll want to start your army based on how much you enjoy painting and modelling your army as well as the background of your army. I've probabally spent over a grand on stuff I either never used, gave away cuz I didn't like it, or never got the ball rolling on building the army (I have 4000 points of chaos as my only army, and I've spent into regular marines, orks both fantasy and 40k, skaven that I just gave away, and tomb kings).... so make sure what your playing is what you would want to play instead of buying into a huge box of things that you may or may not like playing... that's just my oppinion though
