358/2 makes kingdom hearts 2 actually make perfect sense (almost)

I was talking about board games, m'self.

I'm not a fan of kingdom hearts.  It's way out there on the weird-o-meter and I found the gameplay in the original to be repetitive and lacking strategy.  They took Zelda and added RPG elements and somehow lost the magic of both.  The whole disney licensing thing was weird too, I thought.  In general though I think my REAL problem with the game is I've developed a real aversion to these squaresoft, uber-stylized, belts & chains & odd colors & girly men & menly girls characters over the past few years.

I haven't made any new game purchases in a while, the last one I bought was Blazblue.  I'm seriously considering buying Brutal Metal at release, though, and Dragon Age is a must buy.

I'm sure there are other games this fall I'm looking forward to, but I don't know what ATM.

I spent my sick days watching The Office and playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3.  Heroes worked well as a sick game...not demanding and if you pass out the game is still there.

nope the 16th (next week) AJ.
sadly... i dont have the attention span to play a video game based on cards that make chains that dont make sense, which is why the entire story-line to chain of memories is in the instruction booklet of 358/2
by the way i saw order of the stick, WTF??? ???

Order of the Stick (or OOTS) is Dnd 3.5 taken to its cliched extreme.  The characters in the comic have an understanding of how the dnd ruleset works, and talk about it to point out some of the more amusing quirks in the system.

Personal favorite exchange (paraphrased, because I don't have time to look it up right now)

Nale: So what class are you?

Elan: A bard.

Nale: My dad always told me that bards are pretty whimpy and underpowered.

Elan: So what are you then?

Nale: A fighter/rouge/sorcerer that focuses on enchantment spells.

Elan: And that never struck you as needlessly complicated?

Nale: ...Not until this moment, no.

Also interesting is the attitudes of Roy and that female paladin they introduce in the 2nd arc.  Both are lawful good, but interact with non-good characters in very different ways.  (The heart of good roleplaying)

You might also want to check out 8-bit Theater, a similar kind of parody but based on the original Final Fantasy (for those of us old enough to remember it).

Dissidia is like a completely different game.  In Final Fantasy 1, you form a party of four characters from six classes.  None of them have any spoken lines in the game.  You can consider the entire party one silent protagonist.

Does it sound primitive?  It is.  The game was released in 1987, which was more than 20 years ago at this point.

If you played the original Final Fantasy I doubt you'd love it.  RPGs have come a long way since back then.  Still, Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior (1986) were big steps forward and are much more similar to modern RPGs (particularly if you've played stuff like Chrono Trigger or FFIV or something on the DS).  These two games are generally credited with crystalizing the JRPG genre, but JRPGs have definitely taken a turn for the sugoi kawaii~~ since back then.

You can look at the evolution of RPGs in general as a primitive RPGs => Ultima & Wizardry => Dragon Warrior/Quest & FF sort of evolution.

Alright, are people OK with playing on 10/30?  Is there some big halloween function going on that night?

Here would be our regular schedule:

10/30
11/13
11/27 (Day after Thanksgiving...I'm sure many are unavailable)
12/4
12/18
1/1 (I'm probably OK with that...if the store is open)

Dave has suggested we play THIS friday (Tomorrow, 10/23) but I'm not open for that day, unfortunately.  I think Steve can't switch up the week either.

As I stated in the other thread, it doesn't make a difference for me; I am available either week.

10/30 it is then.  I anticipated Steve would be the one primarily in the know about the store's potential halloween forays.
