Totally spit-balling here...
« on: August 30, 2009, 05:46:00 PM »
Next 40k tournament... Doubles or 1v1?

Our last 40k event was a doubles tournament.  These work MUCH better for us due to space issues (number of players) and the level of interest.

The flip side is that we haven't had a 1v1 tournament in a long while and people might prefer it.  Chances are we will have to tell people that they can't play if we run a 1v1.

Basically, 12 tables = 24 players if we go with 1v1 and 48 players if we go 2v2 again.

What to do... what to do... hmmm... ;)

Let me know what you think.  The more of you that are "vocal" the better.  Don't be shy.

Doubles sounds better.

Hey Alan need a partner? We tend to do fairly well together for balanced forces.

Doubles tournaments are indeed enjoyable and force one to both see and react to a greater number of forces/threats. As for creating extra slots in case of a good showing I'd advise you to weigh that against the fact that school is back in session now and a moderate number of our "regulars" Are infact away at college.

Doubles would be awesome with a higher point total.  Like 2k per person.

Singles is great to but more people the better.

I got your solution.  Run both.

I enjoy playing in both, there are perk's to both side's.

The key for a good doubles attendance-wise is enough advance time to 'advertise' on other gaming site's to draw more people in, which is good for the store and the people playing for the prize support

I agree that double tourney's are a lot more fun than singles tournaments, but singles tournaments in my opinion are the better judge of who is the best general, painting, sports, etc.

In the end like Troy said its good to run both maybe every other format would work best.

Doubles are great.  Singles are good.  Winning a game is fun but winning a game with a comrade is even more fun.

From a player perspective I prefer doubles as I find it to be more social and a bigger build up for both players.  I guess singles tournies are better for those with the 'sperg though.

Doubles tend to get me a little more excited to play and more motivated to work on an army, but both are attractive options. Neither would disappoint.

I wish it were that easy.  There simply aren't enough Saturdays in the month / year.

September and October are booked solid with respect to Saturdays, for better or for worse.  November is a bit too far off at this point... you might be looking at a league then... the Megabattle is slated for early January...  We don't want burn out, etc...

There's something in the works that might greatly aid with this "problem" however... ;)

Thank for the feedback so far.  It has been helpful.  Keep it coming.

I have a solution.

GET A BIGGER PLACE!  HAHA!! ;D

Simply put, having more space to work with means having more availability to different gaming schedules.

But in all seriousness, I'm sure something will get worked out in the end.  I don't know how often I'll be around in MA from now on, but if I have enough notice (at least 2 weeks), I can plan a trip up to MA for a weekend here and there.

Then do the tourny on a Sunday.  If Saturadays arent available.

I've been told that Sunday is almost always a day that people can't make or take "off" from gaming to spend time with friends, family, GF's, wives, whatever.

If people can do Sundays, definitely let me know.  I'd love for it to become a viable option for bigger events... but running an event is to the exclusion of everything else on a Sunday (which is significant sometimes) due to the fact that all of our events are in the afternoon and we close at 7:00pm.  It's difficult but doable... This is different than a Saturday where we start the Magic stuff at 7:00pm.  The Warhammer dudes *can* be done and the store transformed for the card guys to start at 7:00.  This allows us to run a 40k event in ADDITION to our normal stuff, not to the exclusion of it, you know?

It just boils down to too many events, too little time, and not enough space.  (Which we are working on, indirectly)

I promise, I'd love to run Warhammer events often, especially on Sunday... but juggling it, burn out, and the other games we support is a bit more difficult than it seems.

If the community demands a 1v1 and a 2v2 tourney, we will certainly give it to them.

Tell me more about this Gladiator thing, please.
