Warhammer Skirmish "Regiments of Renown"
« on: January 27, 2014, 11:09:29 PM »
Warhammer World put out some WHFB small skirmish game rules a few months back called Regiments of Renown (RoR). Standard games are 100 points.  It's a way to get new players/armies started. The essence of the rules are as follows, though there is some other cool stuff in there too:

- No lords, heroes, magic of any kind (e.g. Horrors abuse), war machines, ethereal or command group (You can upgrade 1 model [General] to a Champion being the exception)
- Follow standard composition rules for core, special and rare allocations
- 25% of models (not points) can have ranged attacks, rounding down
- Only 1 model can fly
- Wood elves may take a set of trees as normal
- Each model is considered its own unit
- Models have 360 degree line of sight

There are special items that can be given to 3 models, and your General gets +1 wound and 20 points of free magic items.

They actually structured it as a day long tourney, and your leader gets stat increases between each game.  Seems like a cool idea.  You could also make it scenario or story driven...

Anyone ever try this, or interested in trying it?

I just started building an orcs and goblins army in the hope that 9th edition comes out this year and makes playing fantasy on a smaller scale more realistic. This sounds awesome in the mean time while I paint up some models.

Tomb kings and Vampire counts are unplayable under these rules.

I think we can assume that vampire and TK models do not crumble from not having a vampire/heirophant present.

Do orcs and goblins still take animosity tests for every model with the rule with a chance of killing themselves? Or is it assumed they aren't squabbling with themselves so no tests are taken.

units need to be 5 or more to test for animosity.  Since each model is it's own unit, this won't be a problem.

Alright, it looks like we have some interest!  Great!  I too think something like this would be fun.  And don't forget, if we do something like this, we can always adjust the rules if they over looked any issues when they designed them.  Anyone see any thing?

I actually think VC and TK would be great under these rules (as said there is no crumble, and I urge folks to read the GW *.pdf, not my very brief summary) as fear is pretty powerful with no generals on the table...

Mostly though, I was enjoying the variability you can achieve in game play, if you just made a few fun story driven scenarios.  I was also wondering how this type of game would work in a multiplayer format.  Maybe the last scenario is a wild-free-for-all!

Some scenarios I could imagine similar to Mordheim, getting a treasure off your table edge, or collecting something for VPs, bounty hunting (either a bad ass NPC or perhaps each player picks an enemy "dog of war" in advance of the game), etc.

One of my favorite Mordheim scenarios was "Don't wake the giant," where an actual giant started in the middle of the table, guarding a treasure chest... black powder use within like 24" would wake him up, as would a few other things... good fun.

And the conversion possibilities!  Pick a cool model and build a fun little list around him or her, good hobbyist fun.  I could see many bitz trades as people build a ten model force for an army they always wanted to try...

Anyway, we should try and make this happen, maybe in like April or May or so.  Plenty of time to write some scenarios and people to build little warbands.  Chase, Keith, and Jake, you are in charge.  I am more of an "idea" guy.  :)

I actually think TK might be overpowered in this version.

Never taking penalties to hit with bows and every model causing fear... same with VC and demons.

When you have troops taking LD on their own instead of a general and BSB around....

As to leadership concerns, the captain gets "inspiring presence".  Someone can also take a banner, if I recall...

And only 25% can have ranged weapons, rounding down.
