Tyranids are getting a new codex in 5 days, so that may change literally overnight..

I wouldn't ban anything. The 500 pt tournament has always been about how creative you can get at 500 pts. I can make every tournament but for some reason when 500 pts (my favorite event) rolls around something comes up and I cannot make it with the exception of the first. I had a treat for the lovely Tau, I guess it will have to wait till next time....again....but probably not.

I suppose an argument can be made for adapting the new Kill Team rules if we're looking to scale things back a bit.

If seeking balance, it does seem a little strange to me to ban flying MC's and flyers, when the winning (Tau) armies recently have not had any flyers or flying MC's in them.   Also, my friend Tiago who lost to Bennett's Tau in the finals of the first bracket was running 6 Ultramarines tactical squads.

But - whatever you want to do, I'm sure it'll be interesting & I'll be down.  I'd also be really into a Kill Team event for sure.

If you want more "squad on squad" action how about putting a points limit on models or units?  Like a 150 point cap per unit or something?

Sorry for the 3 posts in a row but... did ANY armies in the top bracket have FMC's or flyers in them?   I'm not seeing Daemons or Nids or CSM or Necrons there...

I'm not really sure what I want in terms of comp.  I'm not super against mixing the 500 point things up a little bit each time.  I'm also not super keen on doing it.

One thing I definitely DO want is to keep it feeling fresh.  If no thought has to go into list building because people feel that it's been more or less figured out (due to a list, a codex, or whatever) then something probably isn't right and the best, most accessible event we run becomes stale.

Building around a perceived metagame is different than building around an existing metagame.

Yeah, if you phrase it like "keeping it fresh" rather than as toning down what seems to be too strong (which is tough to put your finger on a lot of times), it sounds fun to me.   Another chance to obsess over Battlescribe.

It also looks like somehow he didn't play against a single Flying Monstrous Creature.

Rather than adapt those rules, Kill Team straight up.

When I designed this originally in 5th Edition, everything at 500 points had a chance of killing everything else. The current game has either made that chance very remote (Snapfire) or removed that chance entirely (basic infantry vs T8+).

But if players are happy with the game as is, I don't see a reason to change it.

I sure would like to see more painted armies, though. Saturday was... lacking.

So, I felt bad about taking exactly the same list.  I just hadn't thought about until last minute, and couldn't find something else that really worked.  In retrospect, i probably should have used crisis suits instead of the riptide just for variety, but I didn't think of it until after.

I am strongly considering not allowing MCs and skimmers / flyers for the next 500 pointer.  I received this suggestion in an email after the event (by a prime offender), and I agree with him when he says he thinks that kind of limitation might produce something different than what we've seen winning these things lately.

I think Bill won the very first 500 pointer, although I forget what he took.  Since then I think MCs + flyers / skimmers have been in all of the winning lists.

Spitballing.

You said "skimmers/flyers" a lot.  I don't really get that......there's nothing really special about skimmers, and they don't really bear much relation to Flyers, at least rules wise.  But several Xenos armies ONLY have skimmers as vehicles (both eldar, Tau, Necrons, sooo...actually everybody but Orks) so banning skimmers would just mean those armies couldn't take vehicles.  (Ok, I forgot eldar have war walkers, but still)

I didn't take any Flyers.  I don't love Flyers, as a mechanic, and have been in favor of banning them previously, but if you look at these results, it actually looks like a Flyer or FMC was disadvantageous

If you wanted to nerf my list, specifically (it's OK, I don't mind) I would remove Forge World (was I the only player who took any?).  The list is just much better with the tetras than it would be with equivalent pts in pathfinders.

Rather than adapt those rules, Kill Team straight up.

I think this is a great idea.  I've heard good things about the new kill team rules, and picking little special skills for everyone is always fun.  It might not be a s quick, though, since people don't really know the kill team rules.

Well, T8 has always been around.  People could always take a wraithlord, or a Landraider.  Only real difference seems to me is the Flyers.  But Flyers didn't do well, so I dunno.

It doesn't seem that onerous to require all painted armies for only 500 pts.

I'm not worried that Tau won every bracket, because that means in the qualifying rounds, those 3 players went a combined 3-3. The 5 Tau players in the qualifying bracket went a combined 6-4. (If my early morning math is correct...)

I wouldn't ban anything, but I would post the lists. Everything has answers if you know what the meta looks like.

I'd assume flyers do poorly (at least flying vehicles) because they start in reserves and you've only got 500 points. If you don't see them turn 2, then you're probably just gonna lose due to no models on the board. You're playing like 320 points vs 500 for 2-3 turns.

So I broke down last night and bought the Kill Team rules.  It looks pretty damn cool, and I don't feel cheated at all :)  I'd try to make it to a kill team event if you put one on.

I also like the 500pt format we have though, I'm a late comer but in my experience I've played against very few "balanced" lists so I just expect to see a bunch of weirdness/craziness.   For this last event I was actually considering playing with a 230 point fortification + Tyranids, just to do something different...  next 500pt tourney I will definitely play Sororitas in some form.

Hehe, reading over the rules, I just realized you could give a plasma crisis suit ignores cover, as a specialist skill.  Hehehehe........maybe it's not as good an idea as I thought.

I like the new Kill Team rules a lot. Prevents a lot of the really nasty models, but still allows for some scary models. But then again, it's one model. You can focus fire to kill pretty much anything in Kill Team, if it's causing you problems, and nothing is completely safe. Plus, the missions are pretty rock-awesome. I'd gladly run a Kill Team event. Or play in one, if someone else took my job for a day.
