People would have more points to bring cooler units if they didn't want super big guys. I think what they'd have to bring to make sure they can handle the huge stuff means two armies without those things at 3k would still be a pretty fast paced and interesting game. Changes the whole listbuilding dynamic.

You're essentially saying someone better bring a super-heavy just to be able to play 40k.  A game which would largely revolve around the super-heavy....the other units would just be window dressing.

My extensive training as a game designer says this is going to be great for the game.

People seem to be forgetting that none of these new rules were ever designed to be used in a tournament setting. From the perspective of GW this "game" is meant for more of a beer and pretzels/pick up game type of play. The new books 100% reflect that. Not all units/formations/dataslates/what have you are balanced. So what? If you are playing a beer/pretzels game then it doesn't matter.  These For the players who are only interested in tournaments then just ignore them. If a TO decides that any of the new books/dataslates are allowed then there is the possibility and that the tournament in question might not be something you enjoy...in that case just don't go. Not the end of the world.  I love the fact that GW is giving people options
now - making the game more compatible with their forgeworld line opens up a lot of doors. Some of those doors seem to be hiding "scary monsters" that some players don't like.  That is fine.  Not all doors need to be walked through though.   Chase has stated that BG will be hosting quite a few tournaments over the next year, some including the new books/rules and others sticking to just the core army books. I think that is great.  Something for everyone.

I think those are great points to remember.

It takes a big time/monetary investment to get a whole army together. One of the big things about tournaments is that they are outlets for the community to come together and have fun with the hobby, as well as engage newer players. Somebody brand new to the game probably won't have a giant super guy yet, they may be struggling to get 1500 built let alone an optimized list or anything painted. Tournaments at BG should definitely reflect that and keep the game as accessible as possible.

That doesn't mean there shouldn't be tournaments for people to break out the big toys (and I mean more often than once a year). It's a great way to showcase where the hobby can bring you, too, if you keep at it beyond just what you need to play at 1500 or 1850. It'll be a huge motivator for me to finish painting my Pylon if I can actually use it in games, same with the dusty box of Eldar titans renting space in the closet.

Yes, exactly.  SO when people say "we should use D weapons", I tend assume they're talking in tournaments.   In a private game, go nuts!  Use whatever you want.  One of you play 2000, the other 1500, whatever.  You think super-heavies are cool, then hey, you should totally play with those in your private games.

But yeah, they have no place in tournaments.

A lot of people actually disagree with you there on super heavies in tournaments. Most of us feel like they're balanced as long as the points are appropriate and the missions reflect that people could bring them.

Well, honestly, Rob, that's just ridiculous, and it blows my mind that you would think that.

Hey, same way people have gladiator tournaments, and narrative events that "winners", I could see an event that uses escalation just for kicks.  But the winner of such an event wouldn't be very meaningful...it would be similar to tanksgiving.  It's mostly just a chance to have fun throwing dice around, and not balanced at all.

On the other hand, competitive or semi-comptitive events, if supperheavies are allowed, and someone actually brings one (they may not), it's just not going to be a very fun time.  You may not believe me on that -- but you will, after first time or two.  I'm really jsut hoping to avoid those 1 or 2 spoiled events before someone realizes.

Rob, you and I have played before, it's a relatively fair match...let's do it.  I'll take a superheavy (has to have a D weapon) and you won't and we'll see how you fair.  If you beat me I'll shut up.

I actually think I like the C'tan best, that should be easy to proxy, but if I could steal some warriors to make it legal that'd be great.

It also scares me that you have a Revenant ready to go.

Hehe, exciting.

So Sir Prometheus, being a veteran of the C'Tan (I played him in ONE game), he should be operatin' solo (far away from the rest of your army), due to his nasty tendency to explode across half the board when he dies.
