Rebase?
« on: September 16, 2013, 09:04:53 PM »
The wraith guard went from 25 to 40 mm am I supposed to change the old ones I have to the larger bases?

In a tournament, if it ever gets called into question or there are any rules related issues, the player who owns said model(s) will be expected to produce an equivalent with appropriate base.

Again, that is completely against rules specifically in the rulebook.  Even at NOVA, adepticon, etc it is legal to play old versions of models on the bases they came with.  Those old, tiny avatars a little taller than a terminator (and on a even smaller base, I think), totally still legal.

Don't care.  Sorry Matt.

I completely disagree with you here.

GW picks bases solely based upon what they think it looks good, not game effect.  If they cared about about game effect they wouldn't have oval bases, which literally let you get an extra 1" of movement by rotating.  Also, it's almost always better to have bigger bases: Reduces how much damage you take from blasts, let's you cover more territory with the same number models, gives you better charge options, etc.  The rule about letting you keep the same base is just so no one has to rip models off of carefully made scenic bases.

Anyway, it's fine to have a house rule.   I just wish you'd come out and say "we have a house rule".  Because it's exactly the opposite of everyone else's rule.

or you could just buy a new, bigger base and glue the smaller base on it and look, all set.

ive dont it with my old school, snap on 360 turning terminators. If you still worried about it being just a tad bit taller, you could just cut a hole in the bigger base and put the smaller base in

We went over this at length a long time ago.  All of the reasons for it are in whatever thread it was that we spoke about it.

If it's a house rule to say "If there are any problems or discrepancies involving your models, we expect you to provide the GW standard in your model's stead" then yeah... it's a house rule.

I think you'll find that lots of houses use that rule and that it makes sense.

I'm not getting into this any further.

It's a house rule to do the opposite of what the book says.  The GW standard is "the base it was supplied with".  People take this so seriously they actually allow you to use the demon square bases at teh ETC.  No, I don't know of any other place that demands you change old bases to new sizes.

I agree with Chase, a smaller base could possibely put a model out of charge range. Also I play daemons and models like the seekers and hounds don't even come with oval bases, I had to buy them seperately to avoid potiential issues. Plus they look way better ;)

Yeah, that rectangular longish base?  That's the base you're supposed to use.  It's the base that bikes used to come on.  The rounded bike bases are actually a pretty recent invention.

You think that they look better?  That's cool.

Yea I think round bases looks better because its more congruent with the rest of the army. Daemons are a duel system army, the rectangle bases are for fantasy.

this seems like a great option to those who have a model they dont want to rebase.

ive already done this with the new centurians, put them on a 40mm resin base that matches the rest of my army and glued the new 50mm underneath to be legal.

I dont know how many times this has happened in the past but I know I've never seen a terminator on a 25 mm base. I mean what is out there right now that changed? The eldar wraith guard and avatar? Tau broadsides?

chase has made his ruling, its a simple fix and nobody wants to be "that guy" at a tournament

the rectangle bases are for fantasy.

"are for?" as in looks better with the other square bases?  Sure.  As in "what meant to use?" I'm trying to make clear that you were actually "meant to" use the rectangular bases, those were used in 40k for bikes and cavalry (IG desert guys). The rounded bike bases are less than 5 years old, I think.

Look, I am  "that guy".  I just want Chase to admit he's declaring a house rule, and make clear to everyone else who may not be familiar with the larger 40k community that NO, this is not how it is done elsewhere, there is an ACTUAL rule that says you can use the old bases, and yes everyone else accepts it.  I have no idea why Chase is making such a big deal about this particular rule, it's uncontroversial everywhere else.

WHat are you talking about with Centurions?  They're brand new, they've only ever had one base size.

The terminators that came on 25 mm bases are very old now, and kinda ugly besides, so no, you probably wouldn't ever see them.

Models I can think of that have changed bases (mostly combined with dramatically changed model sizes) are: Terminators, The Avatar, Wraith Lord, Wraith Guard, greater demons, necron wraiths, broadsides, and I think obliterators.

I am sure you have seen one of those models, seen them used in tournaments.  I know I saw old broadsides and old wraith guard at NOVA, on the old bases.

Umm... Matt I believe he just said it.. There was a 10+ page thread all about this months ago.  This is the way we play at BG and the way that other Tournys have played it not all but there are out there.  Did NOVA?  NO but that is hardly the end all be all of it.

Simple fact the BG community and TO's expect you to have the newest bases provided with the models.

Trust me its a pain sometimes but I put all my Tcav on 60mm and all I did was just put the 60mm under my current 40mm and reflock them.

Lets not beat a dead horse.  Simple enough if a model is re-released or updated and comes with a different size base you are expected to use that newer base size.
