Where did all the Grey Knights go?
« on: August 18, 2013, 10:08:36 PM »
Hey everyone, I remember in 5th when the GK codex first hit, it was really popular and half the guys at BG used them. Now I never see them anywhere, which is a shame since I started Daemons, I've been looking for a match against them.

So I ask again, where did they all go? Do people still play them?

People definitely still play them.  :)

I see them as allies quite a bit these days, and a few of the tournament dudes still use them as their primary.  They have fallen off a bit though.  Maybe someone can provide some insight beyond "Cool new army books are cool."

I think they're still viable, i was actually thinking about dusting off my Purifier list and seeing how it stands up.

pros:

T5 stormbolters: awesome
Psycannons: awesome
psyriflemen: great at popping light armor
force weapons for all: pretty nice in the new world of multi-wound MCs around every corner
dreadknights: jump MCs are pretty useful

cons:

-pure GK lists have problems with AV 13/14
-lack of flyer defense, you can use prescience for twin linking and there's the stormraven but that's about it.
-the old aforementioned Psyriflemen and Rhino/Razorback spam with Fortitude just aren't as good in the 6th edition hull point system

One big pro i do see however is as you mentioned... you don't really see many Grey Knights anymore, and therefore your opponents don't expect them. Competitively they should probably be relegated to a Allied Detachment role, they aren't Battle Brothers with anyone but they still match up fine with a lot of codexs

Yea I own the codex but never played them before.. I just notice that they kinda tampered off since 5th. I disagree about the lack of flier defense, a lot of people seriously under estimate the Stormraven.. which will cut enemy fliers in half. Now with the new Space marine codex coming out very soon, the GK will be able to take an allied hunter/stalker which could be really helpful.

I'm having a lot of fun with my daemons right now(especially in the Storm & Shadows Campaign), but I was thinking maybe during the holiday season to start up a GK army since I love psyker armies.

I was just trying to get some feedback why they seemed to disappeared.. unless that is part of the Inquisitions plan ;)

Paladins are too slow and are a victim of AP 2 proliferation, while Helldrake players just love Grey Knights power armor.

GKs as an ally is about as far as I'd take them, and by GKs I mean only Coteaz. That dude is still a bargain.

Palidins were always bad and in 6th all terminators are terrible because they can't make sweeping advances. Hell turkey is dangerous but can be shot down. Why are people so afraid of the Hell drake? It's not like any sane person is going to have footslogging marines walking around the table with their pants around their ankles lol. Makes no sense

I guess I'll wait and see what the new marine codex has to offer.

true, walking marines across the table top is unadvised, but I've seen a hell drake vector strike open a rhino easy enough and scorch the poor suckas inside. And it's not like they're protected in a drop pod, only other option is a land raider that will cost more then the tac squad it's carrying.

That's true, but they can't fry the marines on the same turn they vector strike the rhino.. can they?

Yes they can, vector strike happens in the movement phase

Also, they were very much one of the flavor of the month armies for people that buy what is good.  Not saying anything is wrong with that personally...actually just jealous I don't have the income to do it myself.  Othe better books have come along and the mad rush of people that picked up GK when it came out have mad rushed elsewhere.

Yea but they can't vector strike a rhino and then do a 180° turn and fry them, is what I was getting at.. from a practical perspective.

I know but they don't have to do a 180, the CSM faq that came out shortly after the codex dropped stated that it's basically a turret weapon. You measure up to 12 inches anywhere from the base and then place the template

it's why hell turkeys are awesome / the devil depending one which side you're on

Yeah Grey Knights probably suffer from Heldrakes more than any other army, since they're the most expensive 3+ armour save havin' models.

But more than that, if you presume that GK were the most popular specifically because they were the most optimized army relative to the competition, it stands to reason that eventually that will no longer be true anymore and that the same people who played GK for that reason will move on to play something else.

My ally for Necrons is ALWAYS Draigo with a 5 unit squad of paladins... so here is what im going to ask ya...
Try to beat Draigo in a 1 on 1 HQ close combat battle, its VERY hard, and he can take down basically ANYTHING that isn't armour/Flying by himself
