There doesn't appear to be any drawbacks taking them as allies for regular tau especially if you take two HQs. THe fact that you can do this to at a minimum make crisis scoring!

Well, you have to take bonding knives (which are expensive and useless for FW squads, for Crisis they're still mostly useless but at least don't cost much in comparison)  Also, the signature systems they have access to are mostly pretty bad.

But yeah, I don't see a down side to taking most of your crisis as farsight allies.  I was using Multicpectrum and C&C node on a Shas'vre (rather than wasint a BS 5 commader using them) so I'll have to rethink that.

One notable Farisght signature system is a Earth caste pilot, or something.  It lets you reroll one's to hit (which notably makes overheats very rare) and even better yet the let's re-roll NOVA charge rolls.  Makes you WS 1 but I don't really see the big deal to that

I think the talisman of Arthas moloch has potential as well in providing some kind of psychic defense. 4d6 when making a perils test for all units within 12' and it confers a 5+ invul

There is also a Riptide who is an Independent character.   That's one way to heldrake-proof your crisis suits.

So, that Earth Caste Pilot system seems tailor made for Riptide's.  ANyone else notice it doesn't seem to be possible for Riptide's to take them?  It's a signature system.  In the main Tau codex, only character-crisis (Shas'vre and above) can take signature systems.

He does, but it doesn't seem to be the intention that it's special wargear just for that one guy.

That's what's not clear.  It looks like it's meant to be taken by just any riptide.  Fluff supports that, too.  But Riptide's can't take signature systems.

You've hit on another issue:  Most of "the 8" have signature systems of one kind or another.  It's not clear if that prevents you from taking a regular commander or other suit with those same systems.

Well, there are other instances in the main Tau codex where special characters have signature systems that are particular to only that 1 special character (e.g. The Dawn Blade)... why wouldn't the same be true here?

I would agree if you take "the 8"  and they have signiture systems then that would stop you from putting on generic commander.  Unless there is a rule that allows suck things.

It's a number of reasons that I think this is very different than a SC's wargear.  For one, such as the dawn blade, it's listed under that character.  For another, NONE of the rest of "the 8" have either unique wargear or rules -- it's all just a combination wargear along with IC status.  Signature systems abound (most of it from old Tau, the 8 are old, from before Farsight broke off) but none of it is unique.

There's also just fluff descriptions --It's not described as a piece of gear for O'vesa specifically, nor even one type of suit.  It also modifies the WS to 1, for an SC there would be no need to do that.

It really looks like they just forgot to add "riptide's can take this".

I would agree if you take "the 8"  and they have signiture systems then that would stop you from putting on generic commander.  Unless there is a rule that allows suck things.

Meh.  I'm kinda ambivalent about this, honestly.

Turns out I was just wrong, I missed the line that said "Farsight riptide's can take signature systems".
