That would be a change of pace from the usual greens, blacks and grays.  I hope it is a darker navy rather than smurf blue.

I would go with the brighter blue and sugguest that you go with a light colored lasgun to contrast the darker color's i.e. red, fortress grey, or white.

I had a conversation with a friend of mine a couple years back that change my out look on color scheme's for 40k armies. To sum up what he said is forget that 40k is the dark future and think of it as the bright and shiny future. He has won multiple best painted armies at GT's and other events and every single one of his armies has white or bleach bone as a primary color and little to no black.

My original guard scheme using steel legion model's was black cloth with brown webbing and black guns and the tanks were the same. Once I change the scheme to what it is now I saw a huge jump in my painting score at tournament's.

That being said ignore everything I said, and paint the army the way you want it to look is my best advice I could give  ;D

Sounds very similar to Dave's scheme.

im going to go for a brighter shade and everything including lasgun casing black to keep the painting process simple and fast. I plan on making this one of the best looking armies I can produce. The guard are my faveoritue army due to their deversity.  Ill also need a color scheme for Imperial Air force which is a seperate entity from the guard. That being said I think each squad of planes will be different colors. Im planning on three thunder bolts three lightnings and a Murauder bomber.

Are you planning on base coating in white, or black?  If you want bright vibrant colors, you really ought to go with white.

When I start a paint scheme, the basic choice is between modern grungy "this army has lived in the mud for several years" camouflage and dirt scheme and a more napoleonic bright crisp force that looks to be on parade.  My Eldar force was intended to be more napoleonic.  I base coated in Dark Angel Green.  It required several coats of bulbous green to get the bright crisp look.

My more recent armies have been base coated in bleached bone.  As many GW colors don't entirely cover in a single coat, this leads to a slight yellowing of all colors used over it.  I've just sort of accepted this.

But if you want bright and crisp with an undercoat of black, you will be fighting uphill more than a little.  I don't have too strong an opinion on whether one wants a dark or light look, but be aware that the choice of base coat is significant.

The guard are my favorite army due to their diversity.  Ill also need a color scheme for Imperial Air force which is a separate entity from the guard. That being said I think each squad of planes will be different colors. Im planning on three thunder bolts three lightnings and a Marauder bomber.

I too like diversity.  Eldar too have it.  I enjoyed Chaos for a good long time for their diversity.  I used to play my current Chaos, Demon and Guard armies as the same force, but now winged demons and lasgun cultists are gone.  The Guard have considerable diversity in vehicles, but the troops are fairly bland by the standards of the Eldar or the old Chaos.

With every new Chaos codes and rules revision, I've had to tweak my theme of 50% stand and shoot, 50% fast assault.  With either cultists or kroot mercenaries I've preferred to mix heavy infantry and light.  This time around, it has been harder to recover my themes in an effective way.

Ah, well....

For your air force i would think maybe a nice tiger camo with the blue and black.

I hate priming white so they will be primed black. As for the airforce, the Blue and black cant be the same colors as the guard. Actualy each Squadron has to have its own colors since they are seperate from eachother. I was thinking of doing my Thunderbolts in a gray color scheme with Blue as their squad color, the Lightnings in a more bone white with red markings (yes like the X-wings in star wars....) and the Bomber in a camo green pattern.

In regards to painting, if your color scheme is going to be black and blue, it's probably wisest to prime black. Honestly, priming white would be a mistake, black is black over any basecoat, there is no in between. The only difference would be the blue, but it would be more of a pain to deal with the white underneath.

As for your airforce, I'd recommend going with a uniform scheme for all the aircraft, and different squad markings for each type of unit. I think this would provide more cohesion to the force rather than a different color scheme for each, but thats my opinion. I like the scheme you came up with by the way

gray color scheme with blue as their squad color
But like I said, apply this to the whole force, not just one unit. Differentiate by by smaller things rather the whole color scheme.

It is unfortunate that painting has come to this, and pathetic to say the least. It really only goes to show the lack of intelligence people have when it comes to judging the quality of models. The fact that people have to be won over by the mere presence of "bright and shiny" colors is ridiculous. Attention grabbing and well painted are not always synchronous, and very rarely are they ever in this case. I also find this disgraceful to those who should win best painted but have it stolen from them, because of the "bright and shiny" syndrome which seems to be a plague in competitive armies.

So my advice to you Steve, painting wise, is to do what you like, not what will get you points based upon the simplicity of other people. Your skills as a painter are not always reflected in your scores, as I and others have found out. If you can paint well to begin with, whether or not your army is bright or dark, the quality will be reflective of your ability either way.

ummm wow. LOL I never thought ide get any sage sounding advice. Im going to prime em all black and go for a slightly darker tone of ultra marines blue on the vests and black fatigues and las guns. Paint all aircraft one color? Hmmmm.. The only reason it occured to me the 3 units should be different was fluff wise I always thought they were but I could be wrong if some one could find me some info on the imperial navy an it's squadron paint jobs. If its out there I dont think it mentions squadrons of mixed types of air craft.

Strawberry Shortcut Marines (Played as both Loyalist and Traitor who knew?)
Strawberry Shortcut Necrons

Both would get awards for painting.

Both of those armies are funny. I like how pink is there primary color, it was partially because of those armies and my deal with my wife that I have a pink army.

You don't see many humor armies anymore.

I find it rather annoying that at some places both online and off judges seem to have no inkling of what qualities they should be looking for plus some of them play faveorites. It gets on my nerves when stuff like that happens. As for the humor goes it takes a lot of effort to make a humorous army look good I have seen mermaid necrons before. As lame as it sounds they didnt look to bad.

well 5th Ed is better then 4th. Some would say 40k all together is a joke. That aside im still hunting for fluff on how imperial aircraft are colored. are multiple units like I will be having 3 different color schemes or all the same?
