How many troopers in a guard army?
« on: April 10, 2009, 01:45:22 PM »
In a space marine army, 50 infantry models tend to be a pretty solid number -- is there a base number of guardsmen people try to hit before they spend points on tanks/transports?

I see many that dont take tanks and use all platoons and conscripts. My personl choise is have 2 full platoons to work with before moving onto the armor. It keeps  a nice balanced list.

100 models is a solid number.  150 will get you high fives.

If you are doing mech, 75-100 is a good number to shoot for.

If you want to get high fives go for 150 and be a horde.

Base cost of the new ones is 4 points.... so yeah.

Honestly, I feel that you're looking at this all wrong.  Pick a theme, and play it. You need troops to score and other stuff to scare the bejesus out of your opponent. But if you don't have a style or theme tying it all together where's the fun.

If you  like to build tanks, have at it, if you like more guys, then that too is an option. But whichever way you jump you'll end up with at least 50 models on the table.

And don't worry about high fives, someone will want to slap you regardless of what you bring :)

Cheers,
A

Thanks for all the replies :)

I definitely agree with your philosophy Alan; I actually already had a theme in mind -- a massed infantry siege-type army with some artillery support -- so my question was more to get a sense of how many more guys I should expect to buy before playing a 2000 pt game.

I'm still painting my first platoon so I'm a long ways off haha.

Ahh yes that's a long road. Don't buy it all at once though, you may get 1/2 way and realize walking under arty sucks..

It's posts like this that make me want to play a bunch of smaller games again. Specially with the new dex coming along.

I play mech and I usually play with 80 - 90 model's and 12 to 13 vehicles at 1750. Like Alan said it all depends on how you want to play, but if you want to get roll'en start paintin and assembling guys with lasgun's you'll need'em

I just reorganized my Imperial Guard list to the new codex.  At 2000 points, I ended up with 2 tanks, 3 sentinels, 15 horsemen and 147 infantry.  That's likely as infantry heavy as you are likely to see.  I don't particularly recommend it.  A healthy mix of vehicles will likely do you well.

I will field 201 guardsmen at a minimum then...and none of those weedy conscripts either!
