I miss chaos. A lot. So, after looking around, it seems like Thousand Sons are underrepresented. I tossed a list together, but having been out of 40k so long, I'm not so sure its solid enough to use as a buying guide. Help me out? Oh, the terminators are naked so I can use them for the Warcoven data sheet later.

I pop your BS 3 predator and then my land raider runs roughshod over your army.  Oh and your DP comes running / flying but enough bolter shots make you fail enough saves to kill you.

Isn't bolt of change str 8 ap1?  Sure, it's *ok* against rhinos and chimeras but anything else will laugh at it.  Maybe combi weapons for terminators (say they are naked for the datasheet).  Maybe a dread or vindicator... but the vindicator isn't very tzeentchy.

Chosen with Icon of Tzeentch?  You can infiltrate them and have them a dropping point for the terminators.
Maybe even a normal squad csm squad w/ Icon of Tzeench, twin Meltas in a rhino- Baby Tzeentch marines that came to worship after the to dust maneuver.  Oblits would work wonders for you.

I would start with 2-3 rhinos as some foot slogging troops that run aren't that bad considering you have 50 point rhinos.

Your troops are tough overall against low ap / high strength weapons but you die to bolters like normal marines, remember that.  You do, however, take D weapons like a champ!  You also make marines out of cover wish they were in cover.


TL;DR
You lack real anti tank. Get some Oblits- The lord of change needs ever changing troops!  They would solve your anti tank problem and you could keep your mostly fearless army.
You have lots of meq killing.
You have ok horde control.
You have theme.

Thanks, dude. I actually did a few revisions earlier this evening after I noticed I didn't pay for the sorcerers. I want to fit obliterators in, but can't find space without removing stuff I like.

I realized I did way too much possessing. Also, I can arm swap for the terminators. Here's my new list.

Now that I read it, doombolt is pretty lame.  "Oh look, pay for a 3 shot bolter I already have..."

Bolt of change + wind of change are the winners for the squad sorcerers.  I know that doombolt is cheap and you are forced to take a power but eh.

Something about all those terminators.  Look great on paper but I'm not too sold on them.  Thats like 4 oblits and upgrades on the predator ;).

Problem with the terminators is that you need to get real close to do much damage.  You saw the combi meltas in action, real scary, they killed two destroyers.  Are you really hooked on the terminators?

Bolt of Change seems good until you think about how one sorcerer shooting at a tank wastes 8 rubic marines blasting away with inferno bolts. If I decide to go with your advice on the terminators I'd love to upgrade Doombolts to Winds of Chaos.

I love the terminator models and I'd love to have a head start on that data sheet. Obliterators would be pretty sweet, too, though. A lot of cool modeling possibilities there.

The termies are actualy WAY good in practice and on papper. I have seen them used and wow they are annoying. They especily even look cool if you give them the thousand sons bunney ears.

Here's a list with the obliterators. I actually don't mind the absence of the terminators. I also had enough points to fit in a chaos lord and give a sorcerer warp time to make a unit that could deal with close combat a little better.

im not sold on oblits, i say the termies can do the job just as easy with combi meltas besides i dont recall Thousand Sons having oblits :P When i see oblits they suck up heavy fire even when 3 are fielded they drop fast. Maybe a Vindicator?

Havoc launchers are super garbage.  Like the stuff you see in landfills that flies around.

Proxy and see it isn't that bad? 

Thousand Sons dropped in points, became much more resilient to big gun fire but lost some resilience to smaller arms fire which is what most of the contention comes from.  What good is two wounds (A model with multiple wounds has a lot going for it- GW) if it dies to something big?  That statement has become a joke in the WH40k community.

Perhaps a Terminator lord? Also you could do Raptors but model them on Discs and have a lord on a disc. Constantly Changing Mutation.....yep Tzeenchie enough!

well, if you're looking for a more powerful army than necrons, i wouldn't pick thousand sons. but as far as modeling and painting goes, theyre pretty cool. honestly, i think the army would do well mechanized. a couple of obliterators for heavy support, mabe a defiler or 2, a winged daemon prince and some summoned daemons would be cool and still keep enough in-theme. all the fast stuff moves up to make way for the marines in the rhinos, both with cover from the olbits and defilers (who can also move up and shoot). but thats just my idealistic situation.

Wow, lots of replies.

@Rich: I totally missed the changed rules for those. I figured they were still heavy 2. I'll definitely be removing it.

@ Steve: I don't like the idea of limiting my HQ's movement. Terminator armor is wicked cool, but then he won't be able to take alternate forms of movement or ride in rhinos.

@Paul: I think my complaining on facebook might have come off the wrong way. Necrons suck against plague marines something fierce (not everything) and I'm aware that its going to take some time to get the hang of a new edition. I decided something different would be good mostly because Necron options are so limited (especially in Apocalypse, which is what I'm looking forward to most) and I loved playing Chaos last time I was invested in the game. I get that Thousand Sons have some problems, but I'm really just looking for an army with a better theme, newer codex (mostly to avoid a lot of the rules problems I've run into with the Necrons), more modeling possibilities, and some actual apocalypse stuff.


Anyway, thanks for all the advice guys. Some small details aside, I think I'll aim to get this list together.
