I have only played 3 games and i can tell you, use PSYKERS! the Pyromancy ability-range itself proves its use realitively early in the game, throwing fire balls and what-not. its useful for totaly mowing down (Chaos-Cultists/Cadian Guard) in large quantities, asuming that your getting fairly good rolls...
Its only a suggestion, as Zoey on an episode of Firefly said,

I don't think there have been enough 500 point tourneys in 6th edition to know what is and isn't common :)  It's the wild wild west.

I think one of the nice things about 500 pts is that there's a lot weird little combos.  Like, I'm really torn between 3 hammerheads, or 1 Riptide and maybe 1 hammehread.

The Hamerhead might be painted, and I might be forced to use it just do to that.

3 hammerheads is a combo?

Is that sort of like the old adage in Magic, 7 lightning bolts is a combo?

If people don't start emailing me to sign up (Facebook doesn't count) then I'm going to have to get rid of the painting requirement.

I'm a little shocked about the lack of response to this event.

I used a Dreadnought with a Heavy Flamer in my last 500 list, with a Drop Pod. It was awesome.

Tyler used Bjorn.

Definitely can't say whether it's common, but it's been done.

I'm pretty excited also... Come ON people, the more the merrier!  It will be awesome, I promise!  The last one was pretty great.

Painted is nice, but having lots of more people is better if it comes to that.

Chase, do painted requirements actually affect turn out all that much?  If so, I guess I say ditch the painting.

I dunno, I'm kinda like, "It's only 500 points", though.

3 hammerheads is a combo?

Is that sort of like the old adage in Magic, 7 lightning bolts is a combo?

Well, I dunno, does 40K really have combos?  Markerlights, I guess.
