Painting your models

I think that is part of the problem..no way to enforce painting..so some people will just refuse to paint, and yes again I realize there are legit reason not to have a painted army...but it seems like a majority...would just like to see the community put a little pressure onto that part of the hobby for everyday play to attract more players...again, a fully painted star wars miniature game (not the pre-painted one) is what got me to look at miniature games.

I can't speak for all members of the community, I can only say that the people I play with do encourage painting. Lots of friendly jabs to get people painting. It seems like it works for the WM community and the few people I really know who play 40k.

I know the first thing that made me get my WM army fully painted and based was the hardcore tournament. Since it was an actual requirement to participate, it provided the motivation to get it done. The megabattles' painting requirement was something else that really got me to have fully painted chaos and space marine armies.

Maybe organize events that require painting.  A 40k version of Warmachine's Hardcore tournament.

Bottom line, going to kick the dead horse one more time, is painted armies look better..I believe it adds to the game..there are legit reasons to not have a painted army, but I feel that may be abused right now..and I may start War Machines depending on how many people at the store and when...and yes, I will paint my WM army before playing.

First of all J0kerr, thank you for posting an actual view on the issue, you're doing much better than Jim.  I obviously can't speak for everyone, but to me, seeing armies like those painted by Chris Scotti, or John Walsh, Bill Souza, any number of excellent painters and players, I think there IS pressure to get one's models painted.  That said, not everyone is interested in playing.  It is but one of multiple parts of the hobby.  I know people, for example, who don't play.  Whether we like it or not, we have to be inclusive of everyone in the community, and of their way of enjoying the hobby, or eventually there will be no community.  I agree that it would be good for armies to be painted, but I think that it's best for the group to realize that 40k is different things for different people.

I 100% understand those that just want to paint..and prob do a damn good job at it. But there are cheaper tactical/strategy games that are more balanced if you are not into the painting aspect of miniatures.

Joker while I agree fully on the painting as it adds more to the game and is much better to see accross from the table, Chase is put in a tight spot.  As the TO and store owner he has to please both facets of the hobby and cant limit a tourny to painted only unless it is known well in advance.

This is one of the reasons why I go to as many GT's as I can because you know every army you will play against will be painted and effort has been shed upon it.

Local tournies im afrais it will never be mainstream for the reasons above.

Chase does have legit reasons not to enforce it...he has to make money or we all lose. I can see that.

And I do realize painting takes time...2 months of painting and my army has not seen a game. Win or lose..I want my army to look good doing it. Also why I am looking for a smaller model count game to play on the side of WH40K.
