Painting your models

I was all excited about a painting post for a change....  Definitely, disappointing that the conversation was started the way that it was and that it was troll fed rather than turned into something productive (to be fair Grimwulf tried).

Given we have had so few threads about painting I'll try and keep this going in a positive light rather than continue to bash it.

There definitely needs to be more encouragement in our community for painted models, whether it is casual or for the tournaments.  It is a big part of the game and checking out other people's talents and their vision for their armies is something I love about it. 

and in the time it took me to write this I get a warning that there are 11 more replies, am I sure I want to post this...not sure anymore, but whatever!

I would definitely love to see at least one major event per year, with a good deal of notice, (I'm talking months here!) that has a painting requirement and the score effects the placing.  The tournaments themselves place much less emphasis on the painting than on the placing and sportsmanship.  I understand it is a competitive event and don't have a problem with placing having the biggest prize, but would definitely like to see a little more balance between painting and sportsmanship.  A lot of BG bucks goes to someone for acting like they should anyway during a game as opposed to those that a great deal of time, energy and money into painting top quality armies.

That being said, I talk to people about painting frequently, whether it is because I like what they have done, or to ask why they're pushing plastic around.  The majority of people I see pushing unpainted plastic around are guys that have been around a long time, that just dropped a few hundred bucks into BG for a new competitive army.  Usually, that army shows up primed the next week, and some color and wash a few weeks later as that list becomes finalized.  Certainly not something I would complain about.  These folks are putting money into the store, play hard at tournaments and are fun to play against.

As for testing things out before painting..that works...it would just seem to be that a lot players are testing more than painting as I have seen only 3 painted armies..again..these armies were well painted too.

TL;DR: I have an unpainted army, and there are good reasons.  Jim is trolling, I'm feeding him, and I don't even care.

If your models arent painted you are either lazy or cant afford the hobby. As jokerr has stated, if you cant find the time or the money, or are lazy, go play magic. It is a good game. Once again. not trolling lol.

Jim, I agree that it's sometimes disheartening to play against armies that are unpainted.  That said, I think that your statement that this equates directly to being lazy and/or unable to afford the hobby is absurd, and paints the community in too broad of strokes.  As an example, I am starting a brand new army.  I built the army pretty quickly, and am working on painting it.  BUT I'm not the kind of painter to just slap 3 colors on a model and call it done, even for my opponent's sake.  I methodically develop and test painting techniques on a handful of test models so that I can get my color mixtures and set of techniques down pat before my paint ever touches a model in the army.  That way, I can be sure that I'm getting what I want out of my army.  Second, I paint somewhat slowly.  This is for two reasons, neither of which is laziness or inability to afford paint.  I have limited hobby time.  This is because my free time (which is fairly scarce as is) is split between 3 activities roughly equally.  One is volunteering for a hospital, a cause I care much about, the other is mentoring robotics teams at the high school, college, and graduate levels, which I also care a lot about.  To say that I'm lazy is to discount these other activities as irrelevant, which I don't appreciate.  Finally, my army WILL be fully painted, and hopefully beautifully so, it's just going to take time.  I'm shooting for June.  I'm allowed to hobby at my own pace.

You can TRY to justify it to yourselves but there really isnt anything else to this conversation. Either take pride in the hobby or go play another one.

I don't have to justify anything.  My army is unpainted.  I take an immense amount of pride in this hobby, and I'm not going to slap 3 colors on my models to fulfill some bullshit standard.  I'm going to paint them at the speed that makes my models look how I want them.  It's this kind of trolling bullshit that's getting you flak from the community.

I do realize there are legit reason why some people don't play with painted armies...but it seems to be a vast majority. I would like to see more encouragement to play with painted armies on a regular basis...or introduce a new pre-painted mini game to the store. It just looks better and encourages onlookers on the fence to jump in instead of sitting on the site or playing non-miniature games...even good ones like Magic.
