40k Novels
« on: February 20, 2013, 07:22:40 PM »
So this came up in another thread but i'd prefer this not get buried in drama so i'll start a new one.

What are some good warhammer novels you've read? I heard some guys say they liked the Space Wolves books, personally i've only read the Grey Knights trilogy which i thought were pretty good and Titanicus which i though was excellent.

I've been thinking about checking out the horus hersey books, but a 20+ novel series is a might intimidating.

Thoughts?

I'm partial to the Gaunts Ghosts novels (Dan Abnett).  I would also suggest Double Eagle which is a stand alone book that take place in the same crusade.   I believe Titanicus actually takes place there too.

I also find the Ciaphas Cain novels (Sandy Mitchell) rather entertaining.

I have been thinking about stocking these for a little while now.  One upon a time we did stock them in Abington, but they just sat there.

Once in a while one of the younger guys will ask me about the world or the story.  I'd like to be able to point them in the direction of some of the better novels.

I'm interested in your answers.

This is a tough call, to stock or not stock.

If you can't make money from them now, you'll be making less in the future. Print is dead.

I think it's more of a personal choice, my wife loves her ipad and before that her kindle but i prefer a good old fashioned book that i dont have to worry about the battery dying, it getting wet, or me dropping and breaking it. I like to look at my books on a shelf vs a digital library.

As far as BG stocking them i certainly made plenty of impulse buys based on reading the back of a cover at Barnes and Noble or Waldenbooks back in the day. However with Amazon destroying the old brick and mortar bookstore i'm not sure how fast they would move or even what the profit margins are like on paperbacks.

I've read the first three Gaunts' Ghosts books and the first three Eisenhorn books by Dan Abnett.   I thought that they had some good parts.  They were good enough to finish even despite me being two decades removed from puberty.

I also read "Hellforged", because it was about the Necrons, and they were my first army.  That was pretty terrible.  If I was 11 though, I might have liked it a lot.

Storm of Iron was mostly enjoyable. Pretty much exclusively for the crazy terminator guy who wanted to punch titans.

I have been thinking of buying some of these, what is the first book of the HH series, and what is one of the books that contains a lot about titans?

Seconding Storm of Iron and the Horus Heresy novels.

Eisenhorn and Ravenor sets are pretty great as it's about inquisitors and their warbands.

Titanicus is almost exclusively about titans and their crews, unfortuently at least in my research it's pretty much the only 40k book that deals with titans in any extent

Perhaps instead of selling them, BG could have a Redbox-style library? Pay-per-read?

The Gaunts Ghosts series is very good, read the first 2 space wolf books they were good.  eye of terror was meh at best

as for stocking them... they are def self sitters, better off getting only if people SP order

Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns are very good reads.  I also really enjoyed the Spacewolf Omnibus 1 and 2.  However The Fang was an amazing read and sucked me.
