Some inquiries on the subject of Wood Elves
« on: February 10, 2013, 10:04:16 AM »
I've been working on my Orcs & Goblins and I want to start piecing together another army. Wood elves have caught my eye but, according to my research, they're pretty terrible in 8th edition. Is this true? Would I be able to pull them off? Will they get a new army book sometime soon? Thanks for any feedback.
EDIT: Same questions apply to Bretonnians.

I play Wood Elves in Abington, and they aren't a bad army, you just need to know how to play them. The hardest part is getting the right terrain. Almost all of the games I have played in a forest environment I have won. They are a fun army and I really enjoy them.

As for army books, the order seems to be Dwarfs, Bretonnians, then WE.

That is pure speculation.  Very likely it is a demon fantasy/40k dual release.

Wood elves are not very good currently.  If you are playing for fun and enjoyment, go for them.  If you intend to be a competitive players, pass one Wood elves.

I would have to argue this point. If you play them right WE can be pretty competitive. I mean some armys you can't go against, chaos demons and Ogres are the toughest. But I believe when they get a new army book, they will be very competitive. But without a doubt they are good, the best no, but hey arn't bad, for example. Being able to move and take no modifiers to shoot, being able to literally surf around the battlefield on a forest, and having the best archers in the game. You can do a lot with them.

If your ever in Abington, let me know and I'll bring my wood elves and we can play a game. I haven't played in a while, but I will be able to show you how the army works.

OK, SK, VC, new WoC all run over WE.  DE can beat you using only their pegasus heroes.

To think that "the new book would be solid" is to ignore what happened with the TK book.

Just going to throw about my .53 cents in here...

Wood Elves are about the most disappointing army book ever read.  A "competitive" WE build is more like a joke that nobody quite gets.  The army is pretty cool, and if they catch your eye, then by all means I (nor anyone else) should have the right to stop you.  But if you want to win a tournament (or even a more serious game) they are not the army for a human.

Heres a few reasons why we are taking the time to dunk on WE:
-Characters just plain blow across the board for their points.
-Severe lack of a dedicated character
-Options that were good... 6 years ago
-Spells that are really made moot with the new edition
-Lack of a variety of units (by archetype and sheer number)

When someone says they have won with wood elves, take it with a grain of salt, the Browns win a few games of football every season, but nobody counts them as going to the super bowl.

Yeah, they may not be quite as awful as bretonnians, but every army does what they can do better.

NOW, with all that dunking... If you like the models and style and want to play games with your buddies and not care about winning or losing, then you should pick them up and keep saying:

"I play Wood Elves, YOLO!"

Cheers,

Thanks for the information everybody, it's nice having a community to help with these sorts of things. It's not the end of the world if I don't play wood elves. I thought they would be fun to paint and whatnot but, I would definitely like something more reliable and competitive.

Dwarves, Britonnians, and Wood Elves are not expected to get a redo until around 9th ed sometime next year. Currently next expected armies include Daemons, High Elves, and Lizards.
