Results: 500 point Tournament on 1.19.2013
« on: January 21, 2013, 06:35:26 PM »

Results are the first two "qualifying rounds."

Results of the "top" bracket.

Results of the "middle" bracket.

Results of the "bottom" bracket.

Thanks to everyone that came out and made this event a great time.  It was a fun field, which was cool to see.  The vibe in the room was amazing.  At this point I am convinced that the 500 point events are the best time and most fun events we run.  It was awesome to see so many casual players (or people taking a casual approach) show up and play.

Congratulations to the winners!

Nate and Dave are friends. Well, *were* friends. Nate edged out Dave by a single victory point to claim second place in the top bracket and the store credit prize!

Eldar may be too expensive for 500 points.  Old books suffer.

Notice no GK either.  Too expensive.  Super strong book... Each model is just too expensive.

Well, Tau are pretty old (second oldest?  third?) but notice lots of people took them.  But yeah, I'd consider GK my primary army, and no list I could take really brought the tools I thought I needed.  Best I could do was basically just two full squads of Strike Squads with psycannons and psybolt ammo.  That's not awful, certainly, it's pretty good at killing other infantry squads and light vehicles.  But one helldrake woulda wipped them all out.

I am actually shocked that nobody took GK, specifically Coteaz + henchmen.   One thing about henchmen, they are definitely NOT too expensive :)

If I had infinite time to paint, I might have taken something this instead of the nids:

Stormraven /w/ multi-melta, hurricane bolter sponsons, psybolt ammo 255
Coteaz 100
1 unit of 2 jokaero + 4 Acolytes with bolters 90
5 units of 3 acolytes with bolters 75

It's got an essentially unkilllable (except for via vendetta) trump card plus a powerful shooting unit plus SIX scoring units.

I think that Eldar would do fine also.  My friend Tiago was actually going to bring Eldar but he ended up not being able to make it.

Mur, I considered something like that, too.  But henchmen are wicked fragile, and you essentially have a firebase of coteaz plus the jokaero waiting around until the SR shows up.  Since they're not mobile, they have to start out in view, so they're going to get shot up, pretty hard.

Yes, it is a problem that the stormraven has to start in reserve.  Putting all your eggs in one basket is one thing,  but if the basket has a 1 in 9 chance of not showing up at all till turn 4, that takes it to another level.

Anyway.  You could run a similar package of scoring units + coteaz, and then 250-odd points of other stuff in the GK codex...  like maybe a dreadknight PLUS a psyfleman.

Basically any HQ you even would consider taking is 100 pts, otherwise just go without.

Everything else good comes in blocks of 100, 200, 250.

Psyfleman, 135.  NDK, however you wind up equipping him, at least 200.  Sometimes more.

soooo, 335, can't even take two troops, then.  Unless you take coteaz, but then you have a force multiplier with nothing substantial to buff.

Just saying, this is why I brought the Tau.  I got a fullsize hammer head, a robust FW squad in an upgraded devil fish, Crisis for some longrange missile pod action, and a second FW squad for scoring and a little long range harassment.  IN other words, a whole army in miniature.

It's fun to think about possibilities in this format for any army really :)

Except for Sisters.   There is no way to salvage that mess.   Two completely naked troops squads is already TWO SIXTY...  and there's no way to skirt that.

Also, Celestine's value scales proportionally to the size of the battle, IMHO.  What makes her so great is that the opponent cannot choose to get rid of her, no matter how much firepower they want throw at her.  At 500pts, it's kind of hard to even muster enough firepower to kill her the first time.   In a 500 pt game she's still probably solid, but not really undercosted.
