On a serious note, expect Veterans of Tyrannic War to show up. The brave souls that broke the invasion of the Great Devourer on that moon so long ago.

ohhhhh.....k?  Why are you allowing them?  We're talking things that are not even vaguely balanced.  Flying landraiders.  Terminators riding jetbikes.  Sharks with laser beams.

Primarchs

Sounds like this may not be the event for you than Matt. Not all events have to be super balanced and fair even. It's doubles so should be fun and wacky. If chase was posting an 8 round invitational GT that is looking for the best possible player thy eliminates variables then the gripe would be 100% legit but that is not what's advertised. Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm gonna play yet or not but if I do, I won't be upset of a primarch ruins my day.

I'm sorry, I don't really have a problem with non-competitive, it just took me a while to realize that's what we were going for.  Maybe if there was a "super-wacky fun" label at the top, or something.  I'll bring my Sha'O Rmyr, or my custom converted Grey Knight bikers.  (or my GK landspeeder that cost about $90 in FW parts)

I would submit that if you're looking for something on the more fun/hobby side of things, there should be a painting requirement.  No one looking to have a fun game wants to play a grey plastic army.

Is it really not that obvious?

Allowing things like FW allows for the great themes of 40k lore. It allows for Vraks renegades and the Death Korp that hunted them and other armies that really explore the depth of the background instead of who has the best Matt Ward codex.

I'm expecting doubles teams of matching hive fleet Tyranids, Space Marines backing IG companies, Daemon Engines supporting daemon legions that aren't just bland soulgrinders. Exploring that lush story that really makes 40k awesome. Everyone plays to win but almost equally important is enjoying the story / universe.

I'm not expecting puppy kickers and armies that switch allegiance based on power level.

It wasn't, no.  ANd I have no problem with FW, generally.  Horus Heresy doesn't strike me as appropriate,  though, as even from a fluff standpoint they're not really in the same time and place as regular 40k.  They're a little like apocalypse, their own thing.

Care to elaborate on what makes the lists / units inappropriate?

They're from 10,000 years ago?  THey do not exist in the same time/place.

I don't see anything about it, but does this count towards next year's Invitational?

I'm curious how badly I should try and get out of "Saturday-after-valentines-day" activities.   :P

There's plenty of precedent for timeline cross-overs in the fluff.

Example: A Imperial Navy cruiser with a Dark Angels company full of Hersey era Jet Bikes, Contemptor Dreadnoughts and odd pattern Land Raiders emerges from a warp storm to discover they were reported lost 10,000 years ago.

.... and that the Emperor is dead(ish)..... and Horus was naughty.... and the finale to LOST was a let down.... and Firefly was cancelled.... you get the idea.

Instead of arguing about essentially how far off the established path any particular bit of rules or fluff, I'll just say this:  Even Forgeworld did not intend Horus Heresy to be used with normal 40K.  They inteneded all their regular stuff to be used that way (or some with apocalypse) but Horus Heresy is meant to be it's own thing.

So, the really gross things in the Horus Heresy books (Titans, Primarchs, etc.) are all in the "Lords of War" 30k Force Org. Slot.  There is no 40k "Lords of War" force org. slot.  So, perhaps the tournament could just enforce that restriction.  Speaking from experience, the rest of the stuff in that book isn't too terribly broken.  That should stop lists like:

Coteaz
3 Acolytes
3 Acolytes
Warhound Titan

From happening.  Thoughts anyone?
Too busy being AWESOME to listen to your whining.
