Well, yes, the downside is that you more or less have to have a subscription to white dwarf to know what "current" is. It's pretty shameless on GW's part, same as forcing everyone to buy hardcover codex's, when I think basically no one wants them, especially for day to day use. (or, you can undertake certain form's of copyright infringement, because frankly, screw GW)
On the upside, it does mean that armies don't go nearly as long without at least some love from GW. It means that White Dwarf is more than just an advertisement GW somehow tricked you into paying for. (it's still that, too)
