White Dwarf Rules
« on: January 07, 2013, 12:15:57 PM »
So if new units/rule changes are only published in white dwarf are they legal?

If so, that is kinda dumb...they should be in the FAQ.

to the best of my knowledge White Dwarf Rules are an optional rule set but you have ask your opponent for permission or have permission from the Organizer if you wish to use them in a Tournie.

The only "Official Legal" rules white dwarf are/were the "chapter approved" section (i don't know if that's even around anymore) and even than i think there were with permission rules

but i am a few years out of 40K so it may have changed.

What would be the general rule? Should you plan armies with those rules?

How does the Battlegrounds do it?

Example: Screamers white dwarf rules

The White Dwarf mini updates (and you are asking about the demon ones) are not optional.  They are like the sisters of battle codex which is now an entirely WD codex.

So after I spend a ton on the  models...buy the rulebook, buy the codex...I might still be out of date because I didn't but a White Dwarf subscription.

Well, I want to play this game...they don't make it easy...but I want to play...and I picked Tau as well...not a strong army right now.

To my knowledge there are no White Dwarf rules for Tau so you have nothing to worry about.

But I do have to be aware of the capabilities of those I will be playing against.  :-[

Some armys are WELL out of date.  Plus you have some new models coming out this year (flyers etc.) and a rumered new codex in June. I don't think there is even anything on the map for Eldar, and I'm pretty sure you have a newer codex. But a army can win if you have the right list, don't get me wrong, a newer codex and models can help, but it's not nessaery.

As of the Daemon update, all updates to rules will be done as a separate publication (that is included with that particular month's WD).  Anything previous to that (such as the Stormtalon/Ork Flyer) rules that were in WD 390 have been updated via the FAQs.

SoB are the only full up army that has a WD Codex.

Think about it this way... you're not going to buy every single codex anyway, right?   So the fact that a codex you don't play has a White Dwarf update doesn't actually present an obstacle (other than that there's just more information out there to learn by experience).

With that logic, forgeworld has no obstacles to being in "competitive" play then.

I see three options. Buy every book GW makes ever. Buy Army Builder. Accept you'll never know everything and learn how to adapt on the battlefield.

The third option I find is cheapest and most fun.

Tau are actually pretty bad ass.  Don't underestimate the little guys.  They'll fry you quick!
