Necrons (Just fliers right?)
« on: September 13, 2012, 02:14:14 AM »
So, I was making a few lists at work, because I can, and I was wondering if anyone had any decent success stories about Lychguard or a full court with their necrons.  Both are a ton of points, but pretty killy and t5 is never bad.

Here's a look at a few ideas I threw together:

Stormy Daniels: a veil-tek with 4 storm harbingers, maybe a lightening field and a lord for combat

The big cheese: A lord with a res orb and 2+/3+ with 5 more lords with 2+/3+, maybe a chronometron

plew plew plew: 5 tremor stave guys (suported by a ctan, no doubt)

5 lychguard: 5 guys, one warscythe, 4 sword and shield

Hey wait! this ain't Warmachine!: a couple solo crypteks just to pulse or do something then die or get ignored.

Destroy!: destroyer lord with shit that keeps up with him.  Nothing better than scarabs with him.  LOL nice land raider. pen pen pen pen pen. boom.

None of these have I tried for reals, but anyone want to come forward and admit they did good with the robo skeletons?

The sad truth is that Lychguard got gimped because Wraiths are both fast and generically good against everything.  From a game design standpoint, this annoys me, because it's not like Lychguard aren't cool, or aren't better against somethings, it's just that Wraiths have no "holes".  3++, Str6 and rending means they are at the very least ok (very often great) in every situation.

A full court of Lords with war scythes is exactly the same as teh lychguard but 5 pts more each.  Of coruse, you can add in toys, but you could have done that to a squad of Lyches by adding in a lone lord, anyway.  The one thing they have going for them over a lych squad is you can put them in a CHost ark abnd use it like a Battle wagon.

It's a funny idea that'll surprise your opponent, but ultimately you're better off just taking wraiths.  It's boring, and ultimately a little sad, but there you are.

The codex is still new (like all others) to 6th edition, and I think fliers will eventually settle down when we see a few more books with anti-flier stuff in them.  When everyone looks to the skies is a perfect opportunity for a foot/ground list to get a surprise win.  We saw it at NOVA, despite the controversy behind it, the space wolves player certainly had a game plan, and it worked.

I hope that the necron air force with a strobe light isnt the only list we will see arise from such a cool codex, necron players deserve at least 2 builds this time around.

If you want something massivly strong, BETTER then a C'tan, and is a wraith, try to look for the Forge world NECRON TOMB STALKER, it is toughness 7, has 5 wounds, initative 4, can attack SIX times if it charges, normally 4 however if it dosnt, and it has other rules that make it bad butt, but the best is its another deep strike unit that can SHRED hostiles!

I think Necrons are fine without flyers.   I actually have a lot of Necron models, which I just ran out of enthusiasm for buying more models for before the flyer models were released, so I've been having to learn how to survive without flyers.

Really the worry about flyers is not "do I have any?", it's "can I kill them?"  Having your own flyers is the easiest solution, but if you can't or won't have your own flyers, Necrons still have a few ways to kill the other guys'.

- Fortification Quad gun
- Annihilation barges, even when snap shotting, will hit around 4 times on average with their main gun (because each 6 rolled resolves to 3 hits, and with the twin-linked rerolls you have 8 chances to roll 6's)
- Here's something I just tried out in a small tourney yesterday.  A unit of 5 Harbingers of the Storm.  This is 20 shots with Haywire.  So it will, on average, kill even a Stormraven in one turn (unless they evade).
- Zandrekh can give an Annihilation barge or the squad manning a Quad gun Tank Hunters, which drastically increases the damage output as they try to shoot down a flyer

In game 3 of the tourney my Harbinger squad shot down 2 vendettas in 2 turns.  The downside to the gun is its 12" range, but Necrons do not lack for creative ways to move squads around :)

As it turn out I won $40 store credit and put the winnings into... a Night Scythe kit.  So I guess that starts my descent into the dark side... but anyway...  I think there are tons of good Necron armies even without flyers.
