Megabattle Rules / Interactions Thread
« on: July 23, 2012, 05:39:57 PM »
If you've got questions regarding the rules and how they might be handled in this year's Megabattle, please ask them here.

If you're a Megabattle veteran and rules savvy, please don't be surprised if I send you a personal message asking you to answer someone else's question for me.

Can we buy fortifications? is there a limit to how many we can purchase? Do these fortifications supersede the stratagems that also use these pieces?

You know that since the 6th's release and the FAQs, the new rules facilitate your job with the allies rules and how stuff functions / interacts.

Rich, I have zero idea what this means.

Is this an argument for "shared tech?"

I think he's talking about the new allies chart and FAQ's dictating how technology between armies can be used.

Like how Battle Brothers can work essentially as a single army but Allies of Convenience don't count as friendly models for rules purposes.

I'm glad you asked this.

I think limiting players to 1 fortification is probably a good idea.  I will ask Derek what he thinks about this.

My only concern is the aesthetics here.

That must be what he means.

I am interested in hearing what the community thinks about this.  It seems like "sharing tech" might strongly favor Order in the same way Data Sheets seem to.  I also fear it creating issues / bad blood on game day.

We didn't even have it straight last year with the Traitor Guard issue, and that was before this whole new Queasy Acquaintances thing.

If you want sanity, limit players to one codex per player. It's going to be difficult enough playing the game under new 6th Edition rules... at least I imagine so.

Why complicate it?  Allies and how they work is for the "casual" player and this is what the megabattle is, right?  The super casual event of the year?

GW put out a bunch of FAQs on how special rules affect allies.  It's pretty clear on it and we can roll from there, no?  Is it better for Order?  Depends.  Disorder gets a lot of in your face goodies people 'sperg about.  Order gets things that requires a couple moments of thought that can take down the big things of Disorder.

I think not allowing Chaos Space Marine players to not have their Daemon Allies is just plain wrong given the 5 year moratorium on it in normal 40k.

If rules are clear before hand, there will be no bad blood.  Expectations and all that.

Before we look for community answers to random questions, let's take a peek at the rulebook. ;)

The AA mount rule from Apocalypse, since that lets you shoot at flyers normally, are we saying that AA mount is equivalent to Skyfire?

I have no issues with people taking allies as if they were designing a list with a normal force org.  I do have a problem with Vulcan twin-linking every non-UltraMarine whatever-gun on the table.

I'd like to keep it the exact same way we always have.  Your list is your list and you can do whatever the rules allow for in your list.  Your list will have no impact on anyone else's list though.

We have defined what armies will work together for the event.  Each players force can not share tech, transports, or anything else with any other persons force.

This seems reasonable and I'm inclined to say yes.  Going any other way seems... dumb.

Would this limit replace the strategic assets that give you fortifications?  I ask because last year i was able to deploy 6 feet of defensive walls for my guard to take cover in.  I was planning on bringing 9 feet this year.  Losing those walls would make me radicly redesign my list.

Apocalypse has several "Battlefield Assets:"  Tunnels, Bunkers, Minefields and Obstacles, which are vaguely similar to fortifications.  The Front Line Assets: Disruptor Beacon, Null Field Generator, Supreme Headquarters and Shield Generator are still defensive but less like V6 fortifications.

I don't think we should start banning assets.

Perhaps if a player takes Apocalypse assets that are very similar to fortifications we might not allow a player to buy V6 fortifications as well?  Either is fine, but not both?

Is this really necessary though?  I'm far more worried about too much flank march than too many fortifications.

I'd like to surface a couple of past year problem rulings just to make sure there are rulings in place this year.  Not saying the rulings have to be exactly like last year, but we ought to think them through.

Chaos is allowed to use Imperial data sheets, but are they allowed to use Imperial named characters?

V6 targeting rules for vehicles (like V5) says guns may not be aimed more than 45 degrees above or below horizontal.  Thus, enemy units close to a tall walkers might not be targetable.

There was a house rule that Disruptor Beacons must be at least 2 inches from cover.  There was a fear that people might 'model for advantage' by using tiny little disruptor beacon models.  I'd suggest that all Front Line Assets have a minimum model size, it's got to be as big as a monstrous creature base?  If so, there might not need far a house cannot be put in cover rule?

It clarifies at as only working with space marines from codex space marine.  Filter it through Sam if you aren't sure but the FAQs are pretty clear.
