Stormwall Assembly/Painting Blog
« on: June 20, 2012, 12:48:17 PM »
I wanted to document the building of my Stormwalls for my Cygnar army. I kind of regret not doing anything of the kind for my battle engines so I'm making amends. Progress is slow since my wife and I are still unpacking from a recent move, so I've only really cleaned the model thus far.

However I decided that my Colossi would have badass bases. This first one will have just finished kicking the crap out of some Cryx -- as well as the nearest city block. My second one will be venting his frustrations on some Khador scum. :)

1. Textured base and cork glued down. Cryx Bonejack wreck and lamp post added. I was determined to get lamp posts on the Colossal bases since I didn't really work them onto my battle engines. In the end it seemed having it have fallen on the Bonejack was the way to go.

2. Bricks and gears added.

3. Sand and rocks/ballast added.

4. Fallen girder and Precursor Knight Shield added to the base. While I'm firmly against the idea of Cygnar models dying, I'm okay with it in terms of the Stormwall showing up to save the day. :)

The big guy is magnetized at the waist for ease of storage, plus I'm thinking painting him in pieces is a good idea since there are lots of cool details to bring to life.

Parts/Stuffed Used:
- Cryx Bonejack Wreck Marker
- Precursor Knight shield
- Plastruct Textured Base (O Scale)
- Plastruct Girder (O Scale)
- Malifaux Street Lamp
- Pegasus Grey Resin Bricks (Small sized I believe)
- Dragonforge Gears
- Misc. watch parts
- Cork
- Sand
- Ballast

Hopefully I can get some paint on him this weekend. I'm hoping to use my airbrush and do the whole hairspray/salt weathering thing. We'll see how that goes. :)

I like it! Did you get a good model or where there a lot of problems with it?

The model was missing the new two piece legs that I guess they switched to. However the mold lines were tolerable and didn't hurt the detail at all. So yeah, I managed to nab a good one. :)

I have heard horror stories of missing torsos and insane flash. :(

Looking good!  Not to worry, that precursor knight probably give it good to that foul Cryx abomination, and now rests with Morrow.

I will be following this log with interest!

Nate, I will read a passage from the Enkheiridion so his soul will rest in peace. I want to build a Warmachine terrain this summer, perhaps I will build a Morrowan chapel in his honor.

Small update...

1. Attached separate bits (Big Guns, Metal Storms, head and Tesla Coils) to corks for ease of painting. Still need to be primed.

2. Stormwall was primed black, then sprayed with a rust tone. This was then shaded with a mix of Vallejo weathering pigments for variation in tone/texture after salt/hair spray weathering. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself.

3. Painted the base. It was late and I didn't feel like firing up my air compressor. I'm hoping to get going over the next few days. Still have some details to pick out here. I'm thinking of adding some kind of grass or plant life here. I've got some Army Painter Ivy that could be cool.

Its part of the hairspray weathering technique to make the model rusty. Basically you make it rusty looking - hence the red, seal that layer of paint with varnish, spray the model with hairspray (and possibly salt if you wish), then over the hairspray layer with your normal acrylic paints. Once you're satisfied with the paint job you go back with water and brush with firm bristles and peel off paint to look like battle damage and chipping.

I've made some progress with the blues on my model. I'll try to get pics up in a day or two. I know there are other ways of achieving the effect, but I kinda wanted to give this one a shot. :)

Updates. Got some paint on the big guy. The lighting is terrible though. Its making the white look a bit more thick than it actually is. And he totally needs to be cleaned up. I basically got the blues and and whites on there and was really excited about peeling the paint off so some touch ups are on the docket.

Sorry man. I'm mad at myself too. I had every intention of finishing my second unit of Rangers and a couple jacks before moving onto this project. Alas the Stormwall's siren song was too alluring.
