So the fact that I don't know a damn thing about WHFB has made this thread sort of difficult to read through.

Here's what I've taken from it and some opinions / comments I have:

It seems like people want us to run a team tournament.

It seems like "ETC" style Singles events have been really popular in the region lately.

I am primarily concerned with running a tournament that will get the largest number of players to come out.  I would love it if we were able to design an event that would get the Tuesday night guys to play and also appeals to newer players.

The Pro-Am idea, while great in concept, may fail in practice.  I'm not sure how I feel about it.  We are likely to see maybe 3-4 people that are actually "new" or "less experienced."  Having a guy like Keith register with High Elves as an amateur makes little sense.  I think it's super likely that the teams with the actual new players get rolled and the team with the more experienced players crush.  What's the solution for 16 people registering and 10+ being FAR from "new or inexperienced"?

If there were a way to make this Pro-Am thing work, while still attracting a lot of players, I would do it.  In fact.... I may do it anyway.

I am really intimidated by writing rules for something like this.  I don't understand very much about the game, restrictions, what people have suggested in this thread, what the abbreviations mean, and all that.  I'll do what I can a little later, but I'll need a LOT of help.

Jeez... It could be great or it could be a giant failure.  Do we stick with what will definitely work out, or do we "risk it" and give the calendar spot to something that may or may not work?

I sort of want to try it...

I agree on the pro- am idea, if 15 people show up and only 5 people are new, it may be a giant fail. But whatever, i just want to play!

I wasn't seriously suggesting being an 'amateur'.  Just that I want to bring high elves.

I would like to do a doubles at some point, but it doesn't have to be the next event.

The ETC rules are easy, online,  and just requires a little more homework for list checking.

o another idea, we could do teams but have them be random. So you don't know who your going to be paired with. It could fail haveing a 2 man noob team or a 2 man pro team, just a thought.

should do a fair bit to attract outside attention too since basically the entirety of Team America is fairly close lol. i used to hate ETC rules but they've definitely grown on me, really change the dynamic of lists and all that. maybe we should just run an ETC singles in april and save the pro-am idea for a more social/ less competitive event. $10 buy-in to cover pizzas and just play team games all day or whatever. the whole point of it was to get the community together after all.

You don't really need to worry about people "pretending" to be amateurs. We know who all the REALLY good players are. Overall you wont get people who try to abuse the system in Fantasy. If they do then they probably aren't as good as they think and they are and wont impact the event that much anyway. I think it should be broken into three categories. Experienced, intermediate, and beginner. With a short description of each to help people place themselves.

I would like to do a team event like this. I think its a fun idea, i don't think it will bring in a large number of competitive players, but it might attract more new players and people who don't generally do tournaments.

For April, if your looking for maximum turn out I would say do a 2500 point ETC style tournament and make a post on all the web sites of all the GT gaming clubs.

I like the sounds of all these ideas... and the whole Pro-Am thing seems nice since not only will we be playing in a tournament but also learning and getting tips throughout the day!

This is along the lines of what I'm going to do.

I'm SOOO busy right now with convention stuff that I don't really have time to put together a rule set I'm happy with (even with Jake's help) in time.

ETC Singles it is for April.

ETC Rules... There seems to be roughly a billion versions.  Does it matter which we use?

yeah, we should use the most up-to-date version (currently draft #2) which is stickied here. i think we should stick to the army comp and magic limitation rules but ditch the line of sight rules. they're a bit tough to learn on the fly, best not to bother with them imo.
