What kind of tourney/events interest you?
« on: March 12, 2012, 02:50:56 PM »
I've been researching and I've found that there are tons of different Warmahordes events out there.

So, my question is:
What kind of events would interest this player base? Hyper competitive tournament play? Tournaments with weird rules? Painting days? Team events?

I want to run events that people want to play in.

I like a few different things. For one I really like the standard SR format tournaments at the 50pt level. I'd be interested in painting days, but for me it'd have to be in Plainville for it to be worth it for me to go. Danny and I are going to a doubles tournament at The Temple this weekend, so I'll let you know how I feel about that format next week.

I know i don't play warmachine (yet  ;)) but i would like to see more painting days, it's fun and you can learn a lot by talking to other people. But thats just me.

I really like the idea of team events. I'm interested to see how it goes.

Also, it seems that 50pts is the direction PP is goin in.

I'd love to see a single model or battlegroup painting competition.

I'd love to play in a 50 pt Steamroller, though I doubt I'd have the time to until the summer.

I'd love to see a Blood, Sweat, and Tiers event. I would make time to play in this.

Good luck XD it seems we warmahorder's seem to have diversified interests. I certainly don't mind 50 points, but like Ed, im more of a fan of games in the 25-35 range. Also, as it seems that there are a lot of people just starting out warmahordes, how about some painting days/beginner events, though that is sort of already happening with your JM league and Plainville's BB tourney. One event i watched once that was a hoot was an 8 player bash where each person only got 5 points, so people showed up with a warjack, and then basically one other thing, and took turns, it was a lot of fun.

Painting days would be good, definately need to paint my Skorne army before gathering anymore.
Games-wise, I'm still interested in doing some of the scenarios from the Domination release and Longest Night: The Witchfire Ascendant. But that's me.
Plus getting more patches for my bag is cool. ;D
I got a 1!....That's a good thing, right?

I think the big thing is that you have to keep it varied. Some people like larger scale tournaments, others like smaller games. Some people like death clock, others would rather be kicked in the teeth. Just as new people come to the hobby, there are veteran players looking to bust out an experimental list. I think if you do a good blend of events at different sizes.

I think most people can get on board with painting days and/or competitions.

Ian, I love the Blood, Sweat and Tiers idea. That should really happen at some point, but I think it'd need to be at the 50pt level so hitting tier 4 would possible for just about every caster.

Eric here, new to the area (come from Atlanta, GA) but a veteran Warmachine/Hordes player.

I think the main key to a good tournament circuit we found in the Atlanta area was solid communication between the various stores within X distance. We made a pack between all the organizers to stay in communication with each other via a Facebook group to coordinate local tournaments. It helped tremendously to provide a variety of styles, sizes and dates for players to attend. It may be worthwhile to set something up like this among the tournament organizers even if it is a private group so at least a communication channel is available. As a public group though this would allow all players in the area a one stop shop to find out about Warmachine/Hordes events in the local area.

Another thing we notices over time was the cost of tournaments. While Warhammer tends to run higher cost tournaments and larger pools of players, the Warmachine crowds tend to use local tournaments as a simple means to enjoy the game with new players and practice for the larger conventions. Not to say the Warhammer crowd doesn't do the same but it seems the two crowds vary on their interest to pay money into a pool for a tournament especially high dollar ones. We noticed over time that the lower cost tournaments drew a lot more players out especially newer ones and provided a more enjoyable experience across the board for the community. Players were more inclined to spend $5 for a day of fun regardless of losses verse dropping $10 to $15 only to get mashed down by the experienced players who didn't want to take risks and experiment with lists due to the costs brought to the table.

So to sum it up, my advice as a person new to the area but someone who has had a ton of experience dealing with multiple stores and tournaments is:

  • Provide a clear channel of communication between the organizers and players.
  • Offer a variety of styles of tournaments at the various locations each month.
  • And lean on the lower side for costs involved in entering a tournament as it draws a lot more interest.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance with communications among the stores closer to the Providence area.

eHaley + Double Storm Strider.  ;D

In response to Eric:

First of all, welcome to the area. :)

You raise a lot of really good points here. My only thought is that around here, the higher price tag for entry is linked to the fact that you typically get 8-12 players at an event. The community that participates in these events, is pretty loyal, but also pretty fragmented. For example the Plainville location is maybe a half hour from my home, which is really doable. Abington is closer to an hour and a half, and while I've been doing the Journeyman league, its been rough and I'll probably miss a week or two. I know a few people who are in similar situations.

I'd also say that the store tends to offer some of the better prize support I've seen for the top three players, and for the best painted army.

First: I like Jon's gumption with that eHaley Double SS combo. I did beat it before though. No big deal. :P

Second: Nice to see you on the forum Eric. We spoke in the Plainville store a couple weeks ago. The turnouts aren't very big in the area. I also think that the group around here doesn't travel very far. There's a crowd in Abington and a crowd in Plainville. They don't often mix though. I'm hoping more events will remedy that though.

I'm pretty sure that the Longest Night kit is in Abington. Perhaps we'll do that after the league. I'll have to read through the info again to see what kind of time we need to do it.
