Picking a Warmachine Army?
« on: February 03, 2012, 03:11:34 PM »
All this talk of Warmachine has re-peeked my interest, just some mild research online has led me to these first impressions...

Retribution: don't really care for the fluff but seems to be a big shooting army which appeals to me

Cygnar: seem to be the middle of the road can do a little of everything but nothing really good

Menoth: a lot of flamethrowers and can buff the crap out of your army?

Mercenaries: seem to have a lot of options, good shooting? weak elsewhere?

Khador: big, slow, cant shoot, punch you in the face a lot types

Cryx: not for me, i dont like the look of em

so am i completely wrong in my assumptions?

what is everyone using for armies and how do you like your faction

thanks in advance
-Jason

The great thing about watmachine if you change your caster its like playing a whole new army is pick up The rule book or the quick rule book skim though it. You might be surprised

Pick up an army you enjoy the aesthetics of. The Harbinger and Knights Exemplar got me into Menoth and I've enjoyed myself thoroughly since.

If you're THAT concerned about the mechanics, don't be. Every faction is competitive in its own right, and nearly all of them can pull off certain styles in their own way. Cygnar is famed for its shooty units, but they are fully capable of making ball-busting melee lists if they desire. Khador may be slow and punchy but they can build very fast lists as well as lists with devastating amounts of shooting. In general, your Warcaster has a lot more influence on your army's flavor than your Faction does.

I would encourage you to pick up a few books and see if you find a Warcaster or two that intrigues you, and go from there.

I'll agree, pick the army you like aesthetically the most, and go from there.

And I definitely have to agree with Ed... the caster you use totally changes your playstyle... for example from Cryx:

Deneghra - You are a debuffing caster, so even your smallest jacks can wreck enemy heavies without issue when debuffed.

Coven - You have three casters, a central orb, lots of group buffs, and more focus than any other caster in the game, highly mobile and fun.

Venethrax - You are a beast slaying machine... high armor, focused on melee and toxic debuffs on enemies.

So really, you can find a caster to fit your playstyle on most sides.

I wound up going with Cryx and Menoth... with Circle for Hordes.
Reality is a cruel and unintuitive place with rather frustrating game-play mechanics.

I like gators they eat people. That why I play blindwater. I play what I think looks cool and everything for blindwater is playable. I also dab in mercs and I got khador for chrismas and I'm meh on their units but I enjoy thier casters and I dont like thier jacks other then a small few

So I just recently stopped by the Plainville shop and picked up the Warmachine book.  I'm brand new to the whole miniatures hobby, but from what I've been seeing, it looks like an awesome time.  I went back this week and picked up my Cryx battlegroup and faction book (still sitting on my desk as I wait for paints).  While the Mercs look like they'd be fun, just seem to have a bunch of restrictions that would bog me down while just starting.

Regardless, just wanted to hop on and introduce myself.  I'm Jon and I work literally about a mile from the Plainville store and I'm available most weekdays after 1pm, weekends are for my son though, so I make no promises. Hopefully after I start getting this army together I can go by and play a few games (aka get my head handed to me).  I spoke with Sam for a few minutes and he said there was some people around that played the game, but no regular scheduled day or league or anything.  I think after seeing the Colossal models people will start taking notice of the game.  Hard to miss a giant walking Panzer.

Who wants to declare a state of war on thrusday 40K? Jon, welcome! great community, and im sure anyone who can would be happy to show you how to play. I should be there thursday, and i wouldn't mind playing some educational battle box games. but seriously, plainville warmahordes people, lets try to start making it into BG on thursday, there are plenty of tables.

Heresy!

I do look forward to getting into warmachine but all my thursdays this month are for doubles and singles practice for the Trios event, and with everyone else gearing up for Trios I would expect this Thursday to be a busy 40k night

I don't know what your distances are from Abington, but we're always there on Thursdays and I always have my bag of Trolls with me. If anyone wants demos, I can bring my battleboxes (Khador and Cygnar). Aside from thursdays, I'd have to look at my schedule to come and play at Plainville. Sometimes Saturday morning/afternoons might work.

Oh! And back on the original topic:

Pick an army that you like the look of and that you will like to paint. They're all playable, although Mercs have a hard time by themselves and Minions don't have alot of options right now.

I've never actually been to Abington since i live in RI but i would like to check it out sooner or later.

I think i'm between Khador Menoth and Cygnar right now, really like the look of Khador but i just need to do some research to see if their wascasters would fit with my playstyle

I've got 40k Trios practice in Plainville this Thursday so i think i'll check em out then and maybe pick up a battlebox

I'm based out in Cambridge but i come down for tournaments when ever I can. Otherwise I'd totally help in the fight against Thursday 40k.
Waramchine is a great game, no question. The rules are solid, the balancing is superb, and it is so much fun. I just got back from Templecon where I played 18 games in 3 days and can't wait to play more. Seeing all the different factions and what people do differently with each one of them was really cool.

If you're just getting into it, I highly recommend getting a battle box. $50, 3-5 solid models, and starter rules. If you're thinking about Kahdor or Protectorate, then definitely consider the 2 player battle box for $100. Each player gets around $150 worth of stuff for $50. Split it with a friend, get your son in on it, sell one side off, or keep em both. Keep the mini rulebook that comes with it though. That thing is gold.

As far as play styles, if you like shooty armies, try anything but cryx. While Cygnar does have the most guns, every faction has some decent ranged options that become really powerful with the right support. Just go with what looks best to you desgin-wise and you'll be off to a good start.
Play casual games to start learning, and don't be afraid to try out tournaments early on too. My first tournament I won first place, so, there ya go. But more importantly, I learned a ton about how the game works, and how other models in other armies play as well. Over all knowledge of the game is a gradual, slow process, but really helpful if you want to a better player. The more casters you play with and against, the more threats you are aware of, and the better you know how to deal with them.

That, and it's an awesome game. Good luck.
