Tale of 16 Gamers - Army Painting Progress
« on: January 09, 2012, 11:13:27 AM »
Hey everyone,

So I started with the HQ of my army, Captain Lysander.  Took the better part of an afternoon to finish, but here he is.  More of my list to be posted soon.  Following Lysander is the rest of the army.

I'd like to open the thread to all who'd like to share pics of their army too, and possibly to start using this thread as a "Comment and Critique" forum.

That being said, C&C my pic please!   ;D

EDIT:  1500 Points Completed!  Army shown below.

Captain Darnath Lysander

Tactical Squad 1

Razorback

Tactical Squad 2

I know I'm not in the tale of 16 gamers but I have to say, great job as always. I particularly like the work on the face. You might see if you can get some more lighting on it, as the shield and hammer details are tough to see. Do you have an adjustable desk lamp?

I do, actually!  And thanks for the critiquing.  I know it could be better, and highlighting it would be the way to go.  I'll update the OP when I've done more.  Thanks, Paul!

he looks nice and bright. Was he primed white? My only critique would be you might want to paint over the sand or glaze it so it doesnt flake off and make a mess.

Yeah, Steve, he was primed white, and base coated with Golden Yellow.

I've painted over sand before, and haven't had the easiest time with it (lost a pretty decent brush to doing this before).  I may try the glaze though.  I have a can of "Army Finisher" that I've only used sparingly (mostly due to not liking how it turns out on the models), but I may try that with the rocks exclusively.  I'll test it on a different model, and see how it works.

Try watering down some chaos black and just brush it onto the sand and let the sand absorb it. When it dries it will be solid for any kind of painting

Yeah, I take a crappy brush, really water down which ever color I am using and just slosh it over the sand, letting it just take it in.

Then get a crappy but tough brush and dry brush once it's dry.

500 Point List completed!  I edited the OP with pics of the army.  I may work on the basing a bit more later on though.  Still haven't tried painting the sand yet, so will probably try that next month.  I also want to add some grass to them too.

C&C please! :)

I've been experimenting with the sand on my basing and I've finally paid attention to some of the online articles out there.

I've been putting the sand on my bases BEFORE I undercoat. I have to say it makes painting the bases so much easier afterwards and gives you that same solid effect.

You may want to give that a go.

Cheers,
Alan

Hey Ben,

I just noticed this now, but you may want to consider adding some yellow to their backpacks (Maybe just the main areas).

Mike,

I purposely painted their backpacks Boltgun Metal, since it's how I painted my Ultramarine backpacks too.  When I first got into the game, I wanted a slightly different look to my marines, in comparison to what was depicted in the books.  At the time, the easiest part of a Marine to change was the backpack.  Even though it's a part of the armor, I painted it differently to accentuate the differences by using another color.  So when I started my Imperial Fists, I kind of just went with the same thought process.

Figured that the army's going to have enough yellow in it already, so why not add another neutral color to help it stand out.  Thanks for the tip though!
