Question about Imperial Guard/ IG Battlebox??
« on: December 14, 2011, 09:46:30 PM »
I was just flipping through the IG Codex i just got yesterday and i have some questions:

1) Can any guardsman become a Company/ Platoon Commander or Sergeant the same with a veteran sergeant? (ex: Infantry Squad) i did not see for sale on GW...

2) Is the command squad in the IG Battlebox a Platoon or a Company Command Squad?

3) How many HQs do you need per army?

4) Can you only use Baneblades in Apocalypse Games?

5) Around how many points are in the IG Cadian Battlebox?

Sorry for all the questions i'm just trying to understand the game a little more. Any answers would help a lot. Thanks in advance, Dylan

1.) As Long as your Opponent can somehow differentiate that the guardsmen is a Commander, Sergeant, or a Veteran Sergeant yes he can. In most cases It will be a different color helmet or equipment.

2.) I believe its a Command squad you can use it for either device.
Source Text for Cadian Box set of GW Site:
This box set contains 29 multi-part plastic miniatures, including: one Cadian Command Squad, 20 Cadian Shock Troops, three Cadian Heavy Weapon Teams and one Sentinel.

3.) You need at least 1 HQ choice per an army and at Max you can have 2 choices.

4.) Yes as far as I am aware the Baneblade can only be used in Apocalypse games.

5.) Looking at the Battle Box. You get a Base 225 points give or take depending on equipment. In the box you have 1 Troops choice and a Fast attack for the Imperial Guard  so You will need 1 More Troop choice and an HQ to get a legal army started.

P.S. Edit: All the points cost for the battle boxes are different but none have HQs.
Examples: Space Marines have 470 points
Tau have 449

thanks and i just have a few more questions:

 1) If i had 1 Company Command Squad with Lord Creed (or whoever) would that count as 2 HQ choices or only 1

2) In a platoon if a command squad is let's say 9 inches away from the nearest infantry squad can the infantry squad still shoot and what happens if the command squad dies, Is the entire platoon then useless?

3) What is a Commissar, is it a HQ or what?

4) It keeps on saying in the codex that "replace sergeant with so and so" When i replace the seargent does the new sergeant count as a HQ

Again sorry for all the questions but everyone here is very helpful so thank you.

The options you're referring to are what are called "Upgrade Characters." They do not take up any additional slots or change the unit's Force Organization in any way, they simply replace the appropriate model. For example, you may replace the Company Commander in a Company Command Squad with either Lord Creed or Colonel Straken. The squad is still a single HQ choice and is still a Company Command Squad, it just happens to be led by/contain that character. The same is true of the other upgrade characters - Al'Rahem's squad is still a Platoon Command Squad (Troops), Bastonne's squad is still a Veteran Squad (Troops), Mogul Kamir's squad is still a Rough Rider Squad (Fast Attack), etc.

2) In a platoon if a command squad is let's say 9 inches away from the nearest infantry squad can the infantry squad still shoot and what happens if the command squad dies, Is the entire platoon then useless?

A Platoon Command Squad is simply a squad of four Guardsmen and one Platoon Commander. They and their partnered infantry squads act completely independently. You can deploy each part of an infantry platoon in entirely different places, and each unit is fully capable of acting on its own. The only reason they're usually clustered together is take advantage of the PCS's Orders, which have a relatively short range.

3) What is a Commissar, is it a HQ or what?

There are two types of Commissars. Lord Commissars are Independent Characters and are an HQ choice for Imperial Guard. Regular Commissars are upgrades that can be bought as additions to certain units. Regular Commissars are much like upgrade characters except they don't replace an existing model, they are simply added to the squad.

1.) Creed is an upgrade for your HQ, so you buy a Command HQ then pay the points to upgrade your HQ to Creed. So 1

2.)No, all platoon infantry squads act independantly unless you mob them up. They don't have to be anywhere near each other.

3.) There are 2 Commissar, Lord Commissar which is an Independent Character and can go where he wants. There are also what I like to call Line Commissar's which are infantry squad upgrades and have to stay with that squad.

4.) No.
