Necron 5th edition
« on: November 04, 2011, 05:04:22 PM »
Thoughts everyone?

Flayed ones seem stupidly good
Immortals seem awesome compared to warriors ( even points wise )
Im also not immediately impressed with any of the new heavy support choices though,
Cryptek's can have bass guitars

Unique army.

I think time will show it as a finesse army like the DE and Tau vs. an overt army like the GK's.

I'm looking forward to pouring over the codex this weekend.

They seem to be designed as an elite shooting army. Their CC is potentially powerful but I think they're going to be really hamstrung by I2. Lose a combat and even Guardsmen have a great chance of running you down, let alone Marines or (emperor forbid) Dark Eldar.

The only thing that might be an issue is that they are heavily oriented toward the anti-infantry side of shooting. Reliable anti-tank boils down to a pretty short list:

1. Triarch Stalkers - Assault 2 Multi-Meltas on a Move Through Cover/Living Metal Walker are no joke.
2. Scarabs (Entropic Weapons) - Drain the AV of your target(s) and then blast away with your abundant S4/S5 guns. I expect to see these a hell of a lot because they're the only real answer to huge parking lots.
3. Heavy Destroyers - Lascannons stats are nice, but at 60 points a pop and 1W, they're fragile for the price.
4. Monstrous Creatures - C'Tan and Canoptek Spyders can mess up tanks in assault, but C'Tan are expensive and Spyders won't do much at range besides generate extra Scarabs.

Other than that, their anti-tank options seem unreliable (Doomsday Cannon), one-shot (Tachyon Arrow), very likely to die shortly after making their attacks (Doom Scythes, Command Barges), or based on everyone's favorite Gauss rule.

Overall I think they'll put down infantry like nobody's business, but tearing open metal bawkses might be problematic for them. Still, I'd definitely rank them as a powerful army, they have a lot of potential to do a lot of things.

This.

I think we'll see the typical over-reaction to Necrons winning more games because of opponent ignorance, but over time they'll settle in right around DE to vie for most competitive xenos codex.

seems like it, nothing like being able to cram in 15 str 6 ap4 templates for a low price of 450 points

From what I read the Necrons are in no way over powered. I think it is a great balance with new additions to the debribed Codex. It seems they will be great at shooting more than close combat. at first glance it seems they can be a good shooting line army and have a good viraty of elite choices and HQ choices to provide a counter charge unit if the shooting line gets engauged in close combat.

these are just my first impressions of the list, of coarse Im probably wrong

I'm in a flurry of assembling and trying to get a working list

first impressions:

the ghost ark and command barge seem to be built in such a way that it will be possible to switch them to doomsday ark annihilation barge with minimal effort/magnets... little more involved than a rhino/razorback switch but still possible

kinda annoyed at the LARGE amount of Necron units GW has no models for, like...

Triarch Stalker (Walker)
Tomb Blade (Jetbike)
Doom Scythe (Skimmer/Bomber)
Night Scythe (Transport)
Canoptek Wraiths (jump infantry) seems GW USED to make a similar Necron unit called Wraiths that is now OOP
Canoptek Spyder (Mon. Creature) Forgeworld makes something SIMILIAR, but still different and still expensive

Maybe i'm spoiled because my grey knights have almost everything in their codex represented by a model. I haven't been around 40k long enough to see past practices with other codexes.

should i...

A: make army lists without any of these units because whatever proxies i come up with won't be allowed in most tournies?
B: make up some good looking proxies best i can?
C: wait it out and hope GW has something planned in the pipeline?

all that aside, looks fun to play and seems the Necrons have a great range of abilites

Untrue.

Just use mostly GW stuff.  Do you think all the BA players who scratch built their own Stormravens had to get rid of them?

I say B: make up some good looking proxies best i can?

And then if you are only OK with how they came out:
C: wait it out and hope GW has something planned in the pipeline?

I'm afraid this is pretty much par for the course. Grey Knights didn't see too many new models. Talk to a Tyranids player about how they're *still* waiting for models.

By the beginning of December, I think we'll have a good idea of how far along GW really is. If they aren't producing the models you need, proxies will be necessary. Casual play, not a big deal so long as the model is reasonable. Competitively, proxies need to be approved by Tournament Organizers (not a big deal in most cases).

For models in the meantime...
Canoptek Spyder = Tomb Spider
Canoptek Wraiths = Wraiths

They'll likely be making Scythes, so be patient here. But if they don't make them....
Forgeworld Dark Eldar Void Dragon Phoenix
With some mods and flavor, that would look close enough to me.

P.S. Holy cow, I didn't see that Necrons are getting a Walker too.

Necrons as Sucky as they are got some pretty neat stuff. Basically though I think the biggest thing they got is going to piss off Everyone is Imotekh. Night fighting for on average 3 turns that lets him possible do a STR 8 AP 5 to at a propable 1-3 units including vehicles is pretty big. I expect to see him in a lot of Tourney play :/
I ride in on my Bike with my Hat of awesome and say Nay this place should be on fire.
