Vanguard Vets and ya you have a Lot to mess around with in the Space Marine Codex especially with the Special Characters giving your army a special flair. If you want to do Vanguard Vets I myself was looking at Drop Pod with Locator Beacons so you could use Heroic Intervention more reliably :P.
I ride in on my Bike with my Hat of awesome and say Nay this place should be on fire.

Heroic intervention is only with jump packs deep striking. Vanguard Vets, to be quite honest, are arguably one of the worst units in the codex, as with the Techmarine and Scout Bikers. However, they're not shit, they just don't work as well as other units. Or they're too expensive, like in the case of Vanguard, where a 5 man squad with jump packs is a serious point sink. Like, more than or equal to TH/SS Termies, which are much more survivable and killy.

Anyways, back on topic. If you want to go with something with more flavor and possibly fun, go BTs. If you want more flexibility and choice, go Vanilla SM.

Think I'm going to use the vanilla codex.. and I think this army is going to be getting made.  Just put in an order with forgeworld to get some of the special pieces for it.  Tech Priest, Chaplin Venerable Dreadnought, Sevrin Loth to be my stand in for Tigarous (or however you spell his name, the Smurf Chief Librarian), new armor and doors for the lead Land Raider, and then a bunch of add ins to get it to the 250 funny symbol thing  :D  Also get excited when I have an order from them coming in.

Do you have a list in mind, or are you building it now around some awesome set pieces?

Just so you know, the Chaplain Venerable Dreadnought variant isn't normally allowed in standard 40K games.  I forget which volume, but it's from the Imperial Armor series, and is usually only playable in Apocalypse games, or games that allow Imperial Armor.  That's not to say it's a bad model, b/c you can obviously houserule him in any casual game.  Just don't expect to get the chance to play him in standard tournaments is all.

That being said, I'm actually considering getting one for next year's Megabattle. :D
