What codex
« on: September 27, 2011, 09:49:26 PM »
I've made no bones about it, I don't like space marines, but with the box sets and lots of marine stuff I bought when Apoc came out (to put some marines with my guard to buff them up) I have a fairly healthy amount of marine stuff.  Was thinking about making some marines, so my question isn't the typical "what chapter" question but a new one.. what codex?  The chapter will be my own, the fluff story behind them will be my own (based on the codex) but I just don't know what codex to base it off of.  The plain codex?  BA?  SW?  GK?  Is the BT codex still valid?

Real men play Templar. /end thread

I like the Blood Angels dex alot. It is a ton of fun, versatile and if this makes any sense; the most not like a marine dex there is.

Well, you'll need to help us narrow it down by telling us what you want from your army.

Do you want the most competitive codex? Space Wolves.

Second most, (Fast and the Furious starring Vin Diesel)? Blood Angels.

Do you enjoy mid-range shooting and psykers? Grey Knights.

The Black Templars codex is still valid, heavily updated by FAQ/Errata for the better. (And they're my favorite Imperial force.) Same situation for the Dark Angels.

Space Marines are the most flexible force, and have a couple of strong builds.

Go Templar or go home. :P

I'm floating around a lot of fluff ideas on it right now but the one I'm liking the most is an elite force, similar to the GKs (but not really super psyker people).  Not structured like a regular astartes chapter because they were formed post-heresey but pre-codex.  Of the 70 marines that were able to escape from Isstvan III, 8 were psykers and went on to be the origin of the GKs, the other 62 were the origin for the Ghal Maraz, the Emperor's Hammer.

GKs are on the list, mostly because they have the most up to date marine codex out there.  I'm really leaning towards going with the Templars, but it's been an age or two sense I've read their codex and wasn't aware of an FAQ updating them.  I'm going to have to DL and read it while I'm at work (who works at work?)

Templar still have a few tricks of their sleeves that make them really unique. Veteran skills, machine spirit on any vehicle, blessed hull, 5 man units that can take heavy and special weapons, entire army with preferred enemy blah blah blah. Lots of neat stuff. I have had pretty good luck with my Templar I event took them to NOVA.

the only codex that can fill a crusader with 16 men

You can with 10 man assault squad a Libby in termy armor a sanguinary priest in termy armor and a reclusiarch with termy armor.  You can fill the crusader but it is more effective with templar

No, I play deathwing because they are silly. Nothing will make me a non templar player.

Anyway, let us know what codex you are choosing and what your planned list is. I like the fluff

I've got it down to either Templars or the regular SM codex.  I re-read them both and the vanilla codex has more troops to flesh out the army with (seriously, was reading the.. sternguard vets I think it was, the fast attack one... and was picturing pure black chaos knights from the fantasy chaos line.. power weapons and storm shields) and more characters to re-name and make my own.
