Battleground Events, Cheating, and You!
« on: August 15, 2011, 11:47:29 AM »
I wanted to start a thread on how to handle cheaters within the BG community.

I think the community at BG is the best I've been a part of, and the events run by Chase, Sam, Derek, and the whole team are top notch.  Obviously word of this has gotten out as their events are now filling up within 24 hours of being posted.

Unfortunately, a few douchebags can leave a real negative impression on someone who comes down to BG from further away and doesn't get to come all the time.

Cheaters not only make our own games less fun, but also reflect very poorly on us as a gaming community and on the store in general.  Outsiders who come to tournaments at BG and play someone who they feel is "part of the group" for one reason or another (say, they are a paint judge at the event), and get cheated by that person, are not likely to return, or report back to freinds/clubmates positively about their experience.

I understand that a lot of people don't feel comfortable confronting someone directly at the table.
But at the very least, same something to whomever is running the event after the game.  Odds are, they aren't just cheating against you.

It is important for everyone to know who the cheaters are, and if they don't improve, hopefully ban them from events at the store.   An important thing to remember, when you catch someone cheating, YOU have the power.   A person who makes an honest mistake, will have no issue correcting it, and if it is a game changer, would have no issue conceding the game because of a mistake of their own.

For example, a few years ago, back in 7th edition Fantasy.  I was playing at a local 'ard boyz event and my friend Josh played a Dark elf player who played his cauldron incorrectly for the entire game.  It is something that protected his flanks for several turns and swung the tide of the game.   When he realized his error, he quickly brought it to my friend Josh's attention and went up to the TO and conceded the game due to this.

Another example would be if you were at 'Ard boyz, round 1 on Sunday in Abington and during the second round took a break for a moment to use the bathroom and came back to find that an entire squad had somehow moved, AS WELL AS some terrain.

If you don't call cheaters out, they will keep cheating.

Do not let people bully you at the table, if their cheating resulted in your tank being blown up, put it back on the table!  Or let them concede.  If you have repeated issues with the same person.  Go to Chase/Sam.   Everyone makes honest mistakes once in a while, but bring it up with your opponent.   Honest people would have no issue replaying something if it was done wrong.

Anyhow, Chase et al. work very hard to put these events on for us.   We need to do some of the work ourselves and continue to improve our community.

That's true. And sadly, there are rare individuals who cheat at plastic space mans.

To my knowledge and thankfully, this has not been an issue around Plainville, but it's something of which all players should be aware.

I encourage anyone with even a question to call over a judge or tournament organizer immediately. I would rather play an uncomfortable, clean game for 2.5 hours than an uncomfortable, questionable game. If you suspect cheating, better to let the person know you're watching than to be silent.

Edit: My original post included a quote from Keith that named an individual. I thought that person was being quoted, not accused. I deleted the name, because I certainly will not repeat accusations.

No problem, Keith. For whatever reason, this thread reminded me of dirty laundry. Must just be me.

I think keeping our gaming community free of cheaters is a serious issue.   More importantly known cheaters need to be called out or challenged in some way to get them to change their ways.

I don't know about you, but I really don't feel like babysitting someone to make sure they aren't cheating.  I don't get to play much outside of tournaments, where I have to play who the match-ups dictate.  It isn't an issue in a friendly game as you can just not play people.

Lastly, when someone who has a reputation as a cheater is a judge for your event in some/any way, it looks really bad.

You can call it what ever you like.  I am trying to make a call to action here.  I have no problems calling out cheaters, I don't think you do either Ian, but many people are uncomfortable doing so.

When I hear about people cheating in a minimum of 2 of 3 games in an event yesterday.  I will use it as an example.  Is this behavior somehow ok to you?

I am trying to start of conversation here about cheaters and cheating and what can/should be done about it.   Feel free to not participate if you are going to post useless shit Ian.

You are more than welcome to contribute in a meaningful way if you feel so inclined.  If not, GTFO.

I leave the table during their movement phase to use the bathroom and all that, but I guess I'm just too trusting. Should I be watching out for cheaters more? or is this kind of a prevention post?

More of a prevention post.  Also, things need to be said to TO's when they happen.

wow dude, i guess this isn't really my business, but if you have an issue with some one (ragnar) you should probably confront him privately. And, yes, i know Ragnar

My thoughts exactly. While encouraging people to stand up to cheaters is great, l dislike seeing names thrown out. Talk to Chase or Derek if its been a consistent problem at events rather than bring it up on their forums and create some awkward situations for staff.

I don't get it. Do you want someone to do it for you?  I understand in an ideal world, no one will cheat. But from what you're inferring, you already know that ideal doesn't match up to reality. If you feel threatened, stand up for yourself. If you're uncomfortable standing up for yourself, then there are bigger issues at play than cheating.

I am trying to make a call to action here.
Again, to whom?

I am trying to start of conversation here about cheaters and cheating and what can/should be done about it.
People shouldn't cheat. If you see cheating, say something.
