We have expanded the 40k singles tournament to accommodate 42 players.
Oh, you can't leave us hanging! How are you pulling this off?
I'm intrigued as well...  :)

Different config + squeezing a little tighter = 21 tables.

We are going going to run three columns of 7 tables end to end down the store.

It should be fine.  If it's a little uncomfortable we won't ever do it again, but something tells me it won't be too bad.

It won't feel any tighter than a doubles tourn.

Given my phobia could I trouble you guys to make my matches at the end near the window as I had a hard time even at 32.

Thanks

I've already considered this on your behalf, Vance.  Have no worries, you'll be taken care of.  :)

Talked about this potential issue at the store last night, and I didn't have an answer...

Opening the field to 42 is already done, but when based primarily on wins and losses:
Round 1 will see 21 undefeated players.
Round 2 will see 10-11 undefeated players.
Round 3 will see 5-6 undefeated players.

If there are multiple players who table all three opponents for max points (which is likely given the talent), how would the winner be determined in that case?

One of the big changes that you will not see in the nova packet is that for this tourney points were assigned to all 3 objectives like we would for any normal bg tourney.

• Primary Goals in each mission will be worth 15 points for a win, 8 points for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.
• Secondary Goals in each mission will be worth 7 points for a win, 3 points for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.
• Tertiary Goals in each mission will be worth 5 points for a win, 2 points for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.

This is in an effort to have a clear winner after 3 rounds.

Whereas I think the chances for something like you present are very, very, very, very slim, Ben, there are ways we can easily break the ties.

How I would handle it is very similar to the way it gets handled by the DCI (the organization who is responsible of scoring all Magic: The Gathering events) and Privateer Press.  I would simply compare the strength of schedules between the winning players and award prizes based on that.

Obviously I would explain the situation to the players with a maximum score beforehand though, and would certainly offer them the option to split the prizes evenly.

What tends to happen at the top tables in round 3 is that the players draw or one eeks out a minor victory.

I could be wrong, but I think it is EXTREMELY unlikely that multiple people score max points for every goal in every game.

It is important to note that what you've presented reflects a situation where half the field wins in the grandest of fashions every round.  This will not be the case.

I believe a draw with the RAW is possible. Two players table three opponents, and each game plays on such that those players score max points.

Strength of schedule could produce a tie-breaker, yet I'd also like to offer as a tie-breaker the winner being the player with the fewest Victory Points lost over the course of the day. It's like a measure of efficiency, and has a solid identifiable number.

The idea, take it, leave it, it's there. I'd prefer to look the fool now and have a clear solution ready, rather than not say anything at all and have the store seemingly make up something at the last minute. (*I* know the store doesn't roll like that, but there's lots of people from all over coming to these tourneys.)
