I dunno.  THe 3rd ed box was $90 right?  I remember I got one as a Christmas present.  But then I got more (to get more Space Marines) and split it with friends.  If anything, it made me make friends in the hobby.

While you are somewhat correct, models don't have the tendency to be phased out and be useless once newer ones come out. Besides, it's warhammer, IDGAD how much it costs, I'll still end up paying up the butt for it for no reason.

Units do cycle in and out of effectiveness.  Until the most recent Eldar codex, Shining Spear have been useless, for example.  I've a collection of guard models based on the old lots-of-infantry style that I haven't been able to work in an age where vehicles are cool.  I've always suspected that some rules changes are intended to temp customers to buy models to increase the effectiveness of their force.

I just haven't been in the mood for it lately.  My very diverse and versatile Chaos army from many years back has turned into three specialized Guard, Demon and Chaos armies, each forced to fight in too narrow a style for my taste.

The sculpts are exactly the same.  I would imagine the models are nicer in some cases due to less flash and fewer bent or warper pieces.

They models do look nicer in some of the pictures on the website and in the new White Dwarf that came out today.  Ian speaks about reasons why this might be in another thread.  I don't really know too much about it.
