I can't count the number of times I made the joke that they were getting a big dumb sphinx. Now look what I get. Also, those snake things (both kinds) are really out-of character. I can't even... The Tomb Guard look nice, but now they're really small (like every other new infantry model) and don't fit with the normal skeletons.

I can't wait for the rules to come out and just curbstomp me until I legitimately hate my favorite army.

I think the non ridden snake things are perfectly fine.  Also, the sphinx is on a chariot base, so it isn't as insane as the goblin spider thing.

The army was appealing to me when it was exactly that: an army. The sphinx, both in model and concept, is very silly and out of character to me. A giant scorpion? A bigger bone giant/ushabti? A legitimate sphinx? A floating pyramid/obelisk? Those would all work better than that model. All the constructs the Tomb Kings made were made from bone and rock, and both the snake things look far too awkward and intricate to be practical. An ushabti or a bone giant would just stand there, as statues do. The half-snake, half-man monsters are just too bizarre, and it's like 10x worse when there's a skeleton surfing on them, too. Tomb Kings also had a very mystical, yes mundane overall feel. I mean to say that they looked and acted like an "enchanted" army, as opposed to a rabble with monsters (like Vampire Counts). Tomb Kings themselves were all about tactics and nobility, and I feel like a giant black-rock-snake-cat with a howdah on the top just isn't right.

It is all opinion.  The new tomb guard has that new age look to them which many find appealing.  The sphinx goes with their egyptian theme and looks realy awesome, it seems like it will be a mount for the tomb king so overall not too far from the army now.  The snake riders do look awkward, but you can't have a nice day without a few rainy ones.  Im sure it will be a nice codex, and theres no new characters yet. Im sure there will be a special version of each and the old characters thats it.  You should know gw's motto by now: "If it sells, don't fix it"

The TK have always has some of the most powerful magic in the warhammer world.  Everyone else was getting updates, why not TK?  Also, as for thinking that bigger Bone giants would be better than a Sphinx, or a Legitimate sphinx?? (no idea what you mean) I have no idea what you mean.  So the current line was better because it was the current line? 

Also, remember that the studio painter CHOSE to paint them as having black onyx or whatever, you can easily paint it in another manner, make it look more stone or however you wish.

How are the snakes any more complicated than the scorps are?  One 'works' the other doesn't?  Doesn't make any sense.  So maybe a unit here or there is not your cup of tea.  My understanding is that core skeletons went down in price and TK chariots will be solid.  So it will still keep the classic elements intact.

because there was a huge drop when 8th edition came out, because the rules are putrid.  So GW is trying to win their players back.
