I agree with Grimwulfe. 40k is competitive just as everything else is. I personally seek wins whenever I go into a game on top of having fun
So I win right?
You're not even playing.
So I'm winning?
Yes Alley, you're winning.

The only answer here is play what you want to play.  That is all you should ever bring.

I often wonder why some people play the same list over and over with the same partner.  But if that is what they want to do, why not?  Everyone has different reasons for playing, particularly when you have 60 people there for an event.

Just don't be a dick.

What I want to play is also something that can win, so it works out for me :D

Some people have fun winning, so they play the same list with the same partner, it's all about whose view you're looking at it from. I mean if I do well with my partner I'll tweak our lists a little to make them better then play with them again next time. True, everyone has different motivations. I want to win and have fun.

Unless my opponent is a dick first I won't be one.
