What should I expect
« on: March 10, 2011, 09:03:28 PM »
Hey guys, just a quick question.

I've never played in a tournament for 40k, or been to the plainville location. My question is, what should I expect from the tournament in terms of the place it's played, actual tournament games, and the players. Is it more of a friendly just gaming for fun atmosphere or is it everyone trying to win?

Any knowledge being dropped on me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Alley,

This is a double edged sword.  On one side you have people such as those that posted above that its for fun etc..  On the other side you have people like me who are there to win the tourny.  We will try to bring the sickest combo and a very fine tuned army.

You will play in strange scenarios and so on.  While competative players are nice for the most be prepared to prove any rule that is questioned.  Also be prepared that if you forget to do something like shoot a sqaud and start your assault that your opponenet will not let you go back and shoot that sqaud.  These are the small things that in tourny play will be pushed depending who your playing.

Overall its a great enviroment and you get to play alot of people you dont normally get to.

Grimwulfe, that's probably the most helpful out of the comments, I'll keep that in mind. I myself am going for a mix of the extremely competitive side of myself (it gets scary) and the part that can take a loss in stride and learn from the game and just have fun. Should be interesting tournament yeah? Getting to know the 40k players I don't know yet will be pretty interesting in itself. Thanks for the words of wisdom guys! :)

Last year I did the doubles tournament and that was the first time I ever played. Everyone I played ,that wasnt a teenager, was extremely helpful. They explained everything as they did it and actually even why they did it. You will have fun playing.

While Mr. Grim has a good point, it is still a very fun atmosphere.  Will it be competitive?  Sure, it's a tournament.  Will it be fun?  Hell yes, it's a doubles tournament.  You hang out, plays some great games that can be challenging with lots of great people, terrain and tables.

I know there have been whispers of being "more competitive" and such but honestly, it's not typical 40k "competitive" if you know what I mean.

If it were as competitive as people have said, I don't think a Death Guard / Thousand Sons duo would do as well as it tends too.  ;)

Expect fun and good people

But also expect a very warm crowded play space with people bumping into you constantly.
