There are quite a number of things one can learn from the Minibattle that can also be applied to any Warhammer game.

I think something to consider if we ever do something of this level again is kind of limit the number of each type of army to each side.
That would help even things up quite a bit.

If you are facing a gunline in a Singles game, and you're going first, what do you do? Think on it, because the answers might save your hide.

Quote
Seize Ground/Objectives take the Second Deployment always.
To be fair, you were staring down a gunline, but generally, yes. Objectives = second. After all, you should be deploying to provide maximum protection. If that doesn't work, either the board or your list is faulty.

Quote
Dont Depend on Mech lists so much.
Rock, paper, scissors. This is the argument for balanced lists. The counter-argument is to take your chances you won't meet your bane, and if you do, at least to have a plan for it.

Quote
Pay attention to everything on the board as a whole.
QFT. Team Black also communicated better than Red.

Quote
Placement. Not just deployment but how guys deploy out of a vehicle whether it be wrecked or not.  If a guy is close enough to assault one guy he can assault the whole squad. I know we had lost some pretty decent guns because we had to get rid of those guys to prevent assaulting.
That comes with time and practice. But congratulations, that's next level thinking!

Well Ya the Gun line thing really hurt us but ya BLack was communicating better as you said we had stuff all over the place at times and I had no clue what was going on at the other table at times after turn 1 or 2.

The Mech thing is probably more or less like you said balancing you had a lot of Anti-Tank that decimated us but even if we didnt have much mechs you had a lot of anti-infantry also.

The whole placement thing was something I had learned about at Ard Boyz certain choices can make or break a game for you. It got reiterated at the Mini-Pocalypse game where some guns were out of reach and stuff was placed in danger when it could have been avoided.

It's noteworthy too to see what did survive. For instance, it's not a surprise to see both Fateweavers alive. Big expensive units, like Kairos and Draigo, designed to take a beating and who did. Ron brought enough Eldar bodies to hold his objective. Tanks deployed by themselves or without cover were easily picked off, while Willem's Lehman Russ tanks held out the longest, in part because of better armor, but in part because of better placement. He had plenty of LOS blocking terrain covering one flank. My Fateweaver killed his tank only with a lucky shot, and then Fateweaver started taking shots from a building full of missile launchers and an Obliterator. Lots of infantry in terrain lived to fight another day.

With 500 points, we could also allow a half-hour beforehand for list composition. So a team of players could sit down and make lists together. That should help balance things a bit more too. One team won't show up with all infantry, or mini-stars with almost no Troops.

I think taking second turn versus such a large amount of tau would have been a good choice, no matter what the mission.

However, All I remember is lascannons, space marine rockets, and all 4 of my shield drones dying turn 1 x.x

I personally thought this game was great. But i also think that while black team was on the ball, we also had some luck with us. My single broad side slagged a leman russ, predator, and a speeder 3 turns in a row, and i was passing d-pod saves on my fish like crazy. But seriously, 500 point games are fun! has any one considered doing a 500 point game tourney? the nice part would be that games only take like 45 minutes so you could have 5+ games in the event.

First things first!

Yay!  ;D

Second,

It crossed my mind, but some mission types are the issue. Some will not scale down and still be fun for both players. Like Kill Points and Victory Points, where you kill an opponent's unit and spend the rest of the game running away. Maybe KPs and VPs can be settled by a margin rather than a flat comparison...

yeah, there would definitely have to be some modifications. maybe for kill point missions, there is an objective in the middle that you get points every turn for controlling, that would force people to get into the game and not run away.

There is a solid chance I would be interested in a 500 point tournament. The game would be so weird.

Does anyone want to play a 1v1 1250 point game versus my little brother next thursday? He's sort of new and plays daemons. He will be around because he doesn't have camp anymore.

I'm not sure what time I'll be getting up there, probably 6 or 7.  With me not playing in a while and your bro being still new, we might need a ref to watch the game and help out with the rules and such.  Up for it?  It'll be a good chance to help a new player get into the game and get an old timer back up to speed...  :D

I could be a ref, rules guide, 40k sherpa. It would be a good opportunity for me to continue learning about Imperial Guard, and I happen to know a thing or two about Daemons.

I'm also interested continuing the 500 point tournament idea in person.
