You will have to excuse some proxies, Does 1850 points sound good?

Tsk Tsk Ben, your lords of time don't seem to be helping you all that much. ( Probably for their benefit so they didn't die a gruesome death )

On a side note: I can't wait to use the Staff of the Destroyer/death ray on an ork mob or a 20 man space marine squad.

So at max a 12" straight line at str 6 ap 1 shot that may hit up to 3-4 guys. Not bad but Easily Avoidable for The Mighty Power of Space Marines.

P.S. Necrons Still Stupid

It seems you have read the rule incorrectly, if a unit is under the line, it takes hits equal to the number of models in the unit.

Staff of the Destroyer not Death Ray is what Im talking about Death Ray and Im pretty sure its impossible to take a 20 man Space Marine Squad. I haven't misread anything I know Death Ray is ridiculous in a quick read and I know most likely its going to be in the errata with a clarification on it considering I can think of 2 things wrong with the wording right now that makes me think it doesn't work correctly. You first select a point 12" great awesome then select another point 3d6" within that 12". It sounds like that weapon is going no further than 12" because you have to stay inside that 12" mark this needs to be clarified it could be that they mean 12" and the 3d6" anywhere from that point but why would they use the word within and not something like select a spot 12" roll and select a second point 3d6" from the nominated spots. You still need to roll to wound and its not going to include models inside a vehicle since the vehicle isn't part of that unit. It also effects your own units not just your enemies so smart enemy placement can make it much less effective.

the staff of the destroyer does the same thing as a death ray (for use at point blank of course)

The Stats are different for the Staff of Destroyer and its actually worded quite differently on it.

When firing the Staff of the Destroyer, nominate a direction. Then Roll 2d6 and extend a straight line from Imotekh's Base in the chosen direction, a distance equal to the total rolled.  Any Unit, friendly or enemy, under this line takes a number of hits equal to the number of models in the unit under the line.

Thats the exact wording for Staff of the Destroyer and that is worded so you only take the amount of hits to the amount of models the line touches. Death ray is worded about the same way with such a different confusion mechanic on the 12" then a line deal that a quick read makes it sound so much better than it actually is.

Edit: I understand why they Used Within on the Death Ray its so you don't overextend and touch your own troops but i still stand by this argument.

Any Unit, friendly or enemy, under this line takes a number of hits equal to the number of models in the unit under the line.
Okay, per GW standard, this is written very poorly. The following is what I believe they mean.

A unit under this line suffers a number of hits equal to the number of the unit's models directly under this line. Every unit, friendly and enemy, under the line is affected and resolved separately.

I really do not believe the intention is to hit 1 model of a 20-man unit and have that unit to take 20 hits. That would be broken.

Only way it makes sense to me is the way its written, every model in the unit means a hit. Otherwise you have the problem of determine what is under the line. How wide is the line? A tape measure? A string? A fishing line? The width wpuld absolutely change how man models are hit. The way gw has it written means there is no argument about how to draw the line and what to use to measure it

Typically, a line is a line, the two-dimensional "shape" that exists between two infinitesimally small points. Practically, I'd say it's measured out using thinnest means available. Most people don't carry string, so a tape measure usually suffices.

Otherwise, I choose my line to be as wide as the room. :D
