Warhammer 40K ARENA
« on: December 01, 2010, 11:45:23 AM »
It’s that time of the year when the temperature drops and being indoors playing games is more appealing than getting frosty balls outside! I have decided to run a small friendly event lasting for (4) but possibly (5) weeks on Saturdays at the Abington store from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm and will continue on if voted on by members participating.

The Event is ARENA. In this event you will grab an independent character from your codex to field in the arena or draft up an independent character following the rules of a codex of your choosing. You may use a character from an OOP Codex if you choose; for example, Veteran Sergeant Naaman from Codex Dark Angels v 2.0. You may give this character any items available in your armory. This independent character may NOT be mounted on a bike, jet bike, landspeeder, wolf, etc. NOR may your character be a walker or in a vehicle.

Your independent character will earn cumulative kill points from objectives, killing units/squads; kill other independent characters, destroying vehicles, holding objectives, etc. If you miss a week of play, you will not be penalized and will receive a determined value, less than the amount of kill points as the person who earned the least amount, of kill points for the day.

The Arena will be broken down to 4-5 different scenarios, one for each week we play. Each Arena will contain different terrain, different rules, specific objectives, and have “special rules” and “happenings” that will happen sporadically during the event. During the scenarios you do “re-spawn” after death so don’t worry about having to sit back and wait. Each scenario will contain different rules about death TBD. Some scenarios will contain power ups located in crates and barrels (one shot weapons, batteries or ammo to bigger weapons on the terrain field, adrenaline boosts, and a few others). You roll a 2D6 to find out what you find.
What to suspect at the different Arenas!

Arena 1 – Swarms: You and your team mates will fight off swarms of incoming enemies. The swarms will increase in size or strength at the beginning of every round. They will come into the Arena through gates, deep strikes, and other means. You will obtain a set amount of points for every unit you kill in the squad. The goal is to survive and kill as many as possible. The Arena will end when ALL independent characters have perished in the same turn. During the game, if a character dies he will not be revived until all enemy units in the swarm have been slaughtered. At the end of every turn characters may switch their wargear to better prepare for the next “Type” of swarm. Special Characters have initiative over swarms and will roll off at the beginning of every turn to determine turn order.

ATTENTION: Before I can run this type of Arena I will need to obtain donations of units. IG, Necrons, Orks, Eldar, Tau, and Tyranids for use in this scenario.

Arena 2 – Bumper Tanks: All independent characters will be mounted in an Arena Specific Rhino that has been modified by Orks to go Supa Fass! The Rhino is full of little boys with tools that will continue to repair damages, install weapons and upgrades, and loot other vehicles. I have enough razorbacks and rhinos for about eight players. In this arena you will attempt to ram each other useless and recieve points for causing any type of damage, either glancing or penetrating hits. I am still working on how turns are going to work for this but so far I’m thinking the best way to run this scenario is to select a target prior to rolling for initiative. As you acquire kills your tank becomes more powerful from looted parts. You will roll a D6 to see what table you get to roll on; either Armor or Weapon. Then you will roll another D6 to see what looted upgrade you get. If you roll the same value on the armor chart, it will be cumulative and if you roll the same value on the weapon chart, the weapon will become twin-linked. Additional weapons will be added to your vehicle and if in the rare instance that you roll the same value three times, the weapon will become tri-linked and issue you another roll on the weapon chart. If your vehicle is wrecked, immobilized, etc you crew of little ones will attempt to fix the damage on a roll of D6. If you tank is exploded – you will lose a turn getting yourself and your crew to another new arena rhino.

Arena 3 – Free for All: This is the classic arena of kill or be killed. Players will kill each other on a small arena map and obtain points for every kill they get AND every wound they dish out. During this event players will roll for initiative every turn. Warp portals will be placed on the map to get from one end to the other rather quickly. In addition on a roll chart – unexpected events will occur during the match to mix things up. If slain in the match you will re-spawn by deep strike and automatically have the lowest initiative. Your character will not be able to make its movement phase but may still shoot OR assault 6” any target in line of sight.

Arena 4 – King of the Hill: In this arena, objective items will be located on the map and are “pick-up” items. The goal is to obtain an objective item and bring it to the object point a.k.a. the “Hill”. You cannot have more than one objective item at a time. If you are slain, the item is then dropped and other players may pick up the item. Objective items will be worth a set amount of points IE 5 points for a small objective, and 15 points for a large objective. The large object is bulky and lowers your movement range by -2 inches. Also, you cannot use jump packs with a large item. If you control the Hill you get 3 points at the end of the turn. If the Hill is contested, every unit at the top of the hill will receive one point at the end of the match. You will receive a TBD points for slaying other players. The number of objectives will be determined by how many players.

Arena 5- ????: If the players come up with a scenario they would like to try I can implement it in the game and make rules for it.

At the end of the Arena Games the winner is determined by whomever has accumulated the most amount of points over the course of the games. There is no entry fee but the GM does appreciated a cold drink while playing. The winner of the Arena will receive bragging rights and an independent character of their choice (excluding SOME forgeworld characters) provided by myself.

If you are interested in joining to play or would like to help run the game as an assistant *I can use one for this match*, please make a post and make up a character sheet. Any suggestions, questions, etc. please list below.

This should be a fun event and a relaxing break from the normal Warhammer 40K army vs. army games. All Characters should be within the spirit of the game and MUST be painted to a degree. Primer alone is not acceptable.
I like to go home, pour some whiskey, and have a surplus of units to pick from.

I'm game. Lets hope my Tau don't get pulverized in every round for a lack of power weapons :P

I'm willing to help out any way I can (including putting my Tau in for the swarm arena), but I can't guarantee I'll be there every week as I work early on saturdays.

No worries about being there every week or not. You will still get some points even in absence, and I greatly appreciate your donation of Tau units for the Swarm Arena.

Due to the lack of interest thus far, I will not be starting Arena tommorow December 4th, but will try to start the event on Saturday, December 11th. I would like to see at least five people interested in participating in the event, with a cap of ten people total.

Can it be a character/HQ that does not have the Independant Character rule IE: BAs Mephiston or a Tyranid Hive Tyrant?

Yes, you can bring an HQ unit that does not have the "independant rule" as long as it is within the spirit of the game and not overpowered when paired up with the other heroes. You can also make your own hero - be creative - and I'll allow it as long as you are folllowing the rules of a character that is available in your codex and using only the wargear allowed as stated in your armory.

I have decided to push the Arena back until after the doubles tournament weekend. This is due in part to college finals, preparations for Christmas and New Years, and the Doubles Tournament.

The Arena date is set and will commence on Saturday, Jan. 14th. I will be putting a lot of time and thought into this in hopes it will produce a fun game that all can enjoy. I myself will not be playing a Hero but will play the NPCs and I'm still looking for some help with this and donations for the Swarm Arena. Spread the word to anyone not active in the forum to sign up and participate or to even come down and watch the heroes battle it out.
