warhammer 8th and..... historical!
« on: July 22, 2010, 04:44:06 PM »
Hey all,

I havent been able to try 8th edition of set up a game lately because I broke my ankle playing some basketball, but I have read the book (the rule section at least) and I cant wait to try it out, how are games going so far? Ive seen ppl setting up games on the forums so I figure there have been some games of it by now, so whats the general consensus? first impressions?

also, b/c Ive been laid up a bit I have been spending to much time on the internet and I have become very interested in some historical games.  So I was hoping to see if anyone is interested in trying out Warhammer Ancient battles with me?  I am going to ask battleground to order me a copy of the book and I figured we could throw down our fantasy figures and try out the ruleset.   but if no one wants to try it out I wont bother spending 50 bucks on a new rulebook.

so anyone fancy a game of warhammer without magic?

-Tim

p.s. - if you look at the warhammer historical site, they have some fun looking skirmish games based in the old west and a pirate version,  looks fun to me....

I've been playing a lot of 8th and I like it. I've been wanting to try the old west game for a while.

I know Nick Hough has been trying to get anyone he can to play Ancients.  He has a Roman force.  If I wasn't just here for the summer, I would also be playing.
It's the throwing phase now.

Jared: I had a chance to read the old west game rules (Legend of the Old West by Warhammer Historicals) and I really like them, I would love to try it out.

Rob: is Nick on the forums?  What days is he around the store, if he doesn't mind Id like to talk to him about ancients.

thanks

Nick is "The Emperor" on the forums.  He is in on random days during the week (at least they seem random to me).

Hey Tim, sorry about your ankle, that's a tough situation. I have been playing 8th. edition and I like it a lot more than I thought I would. I like what they did with the rules and it makes the game a little better I think. Also, I am interested in historical but I don't know when I will get started with it. I would like to try ancients.

I have the first edition of the Warhammer Ancients and it is the same as earlier variations of WFB without magic. Most armies are the same. It comes down to strategy. I know Warhammer Historical just came out with a new edition of WAB and I am thinking of picking it up.

Does anyone have any interest in Black Powder by Warlord Games? Paul and I are starting armies for the American Revolution.

I bought the Blackpowder rules at TotalCon and played in a few BP games at Historicon this year, including a huge demo run by the authors of the ruleset and the Perry brothers (miniature figure sculptors...)

I would be VERY interested in getting on board with that.  What scale figs are you using?  The rules work equally well with 15mm (with appropriate adjustments) or 25mm/28mm.

I'd love to give the Ancients a try too.  Don't have anything put together for it of course, but if others are going to be playing...same with Legend of the Old West.

You played a game with the Perry brothers? That is pretty cool. We are doing American Revolution for Black Powder in 28mm. We seem to both use Perry brother miniatures exclusively.

Yeah it was very cool, very very nice guys both of them.

28 works; what forces are you guys working on?

how large a force are you guys playing black powder with?  I think i read somewhere that the game doesnt give army lists but instead relies on the players coming to an agreement or picking a historical accurate force,  is that right?

basically i'm curious whats the buy-in for a perry bros army.

There aren't any army lists that's true.  There is a "kind of" points system in the back of the rule book, but you're right; in general the idea is that someone will design a scenario, either by researching some historical battle or coming up with a plausible "what if" including map and forces to be used.

The Perry figs are pricier than most I think, at least for the metal ones (They have plastic lines for ACW, Napoleonics and I think ECW that are relatively cheap).  I have some 28mm French Napoleonic figs from them and they are better than most, at least in my non-professional opinion.

Oh, and as for number of figures, a normal sized infantry unit will have 24-30 figs, a cavalry unit 12-16 ; if you use the guidelines in  the rule book.  An artillery unit is normally represented by just 1 gun with crew.

Army size can be as big as you want, but typical sized games seem to be anywhere from 2-5 brigades, with each brigade having 1-5 units in it.
