So it goes around the table, with the most vivid imagery sounding something like this: “Whoa, a 23! They only have a 14, so with your plus five doubled, that makes negative three!” To put it mildly, this is not the captivating prose of the beloved fantasy books that inspire the players, and creators, of these games.

I thought this essay made a good point: Too much rules and numbers can choke the imagination and drama out of RPGs, and without that, all that's left is a skirmish boardgame and the occasional silly accent.

This is mostly up to style of play and personal taste. And rpgs are a skirmish board games boards optional with highly specialized rule-set with silly accents as you play out your characters actions. Other people may not want a game where everyone is in character all the time and very serious about it. Again depends on the taste of the person and if they can find those tastes.

How the game goes is very highly not onyl on the person but the group.   Some groups can go full into charater and keep it there for hours on end flushing out the campaign and scene with very little rule checking or numbers in general... and some groups are straight by the numbers and all about the meta as it were.

The reason why some people dont play RPGs is they may not have found a group or set of people that is a kin to their playstyle
Children yet, the tale to hear, Eager eye and willing ear, Lovingly shall nestle near.  In a Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the days go by, Dreaming as the summers die: Ever drifting down the stream --Lingering in the golden gleam --Life, what is it but a dream?
