Harpy/Hive crone
« on: February 02, 2014, 12:38:08 PM »
I bought this kit and I'm personally leaning toward building it as the harpy because I have been running spore mine heavy but the hive Crore does seem pretty cool. Any thoughts? What do you guys think of the two fliers?

i like the crone for flying along with two flying tyrants since it's more likely to be ignored and get in close to do some damage (plus the haywire really helps if you think you're gonna face a lot of av14 stuff, like in escalation). i think the harpy is more reliable by its self since it doesn't strictly need to close to do damage, plus it's cheaper.

personally, i magnetized my first one and plan to do the same with my second.

It depends on what role you want it to perform, it seems the Harpy is better at bombing infantry and shooting tanks with the venom cannon. Crone is meant to make sure skies are clear from enemy fliers.

On the reverse side, the Harpy can provide anti flier roles with V-Cannon but not as good as the Crone with Tenticlids+Vector Strike. The Crone can perform anti infantry roles with the drool cannon, but it has to get close to the enemy and its not very durable, so it might be better to use it against isolated scout type units. Also Crone can still kill tanks/MEQ with S8 vector strike.. if there's no fliers enemy fliers on the board I'd just fire the tenticlids at the tanks, because why the hell not ;) Downside is that Crone has only 4 tenticlids while the Harpy has unlimited spore bombs.

It really depends on what you're trying to do brah

unfortunately, no it can't. the heavy venom cannon is a blast weapon, so it can't hit a zooming flier or a swooping fmc. the only thing a harpy can do to a flier is vector strike.

Ah good catch, well it depends on what the rest of the player's list looks like. If they already have 2x Flyrants then that may be enough. Can always grab an anti-air fort too.

absolutely. the crone is better against vehicles and fliers whereas the harpy is better against infantry. keep in mind though that the crone as a bit more versatility since it also has a flame template weapon it can use on infantry once it closes. ideally you'll want to dump the tentaclids before you get in vector strike/flame template range to max out its value.

i think the best thing about the harpy is the synergy with biovores and the horror (whether you rolled it on your wizard mcs or brought broodlords) to give you piles of pinning weapons.
