Upcoming Events?!

Busted Chase!

i now demand all these things happen... and work in Trios once a year as well... and a 2500 singles or doubles...

I like the 500 pointers because they're fast, fun, have an entirely different metagame, have 5 rounds, have 8 winners, have brackets, and have a TON of casual appeal. They're different, uncommon, and cool. We want to keep all of these things true.

The Trios events are amazing and different as well. I like them because they ask players to play what boils down to 3 entirely different games that feed into their team's overall ranking in the event. Each player takes a 2000 point list and a 1000 point list. They use the 2000 point list in a 1v1 and the 1000 point list in two different 2v2s. We haven't run a Trios event in 2013 for a very simple reason; It's difficult for people to get a team of 3 together. There's several obvious and non-obvious reasons why Trios are difficult to execute, but I've gone on long enough.

Personally, I'd love to host more events with causal appeal. I am ABSOLUTELY open to suggestions and encourage you (or anyone) to send them our way.

A couple of people have mentioned our store's message board. That's where a lot of the smaller, casual things get posted (leagues, game days, TANKSgiving type events, Apocalypse games, etc). Here on Dakka I pretty much only use the "Tournament Discussion" forum to... well... post up tournaments  .

So, October 5th we're running 40k Doubles in Plainville.

I'm probably going to run a 1250 point "Power Armor Only" event on October 19th in Plainville also. I have yet to hammer out the final details, but the idea here is to let people play their new Space Marines in a casual, goofy tournament setting.

Early November will offer up another 1850 point Singles to get the guys ready for DaBoyz GT in NY.

Late November (while the guys are away at DaBoyz GT in NY) I'll likely do some sort of small event. Maybe a 1500 pointer like we did while people were away at NOVA. Maybe I'll do an Apocalypse event. Maybe 500, but I doubt it seeing as how they're much better with a full 32 people.

Late Novemeber will also offer TANKSgiving, like we do every year. It's awesome, free, and we give away a free tank.

At some point between now and the end of the year we'll likely do our "40k Walker Race" which is still in development. A "Monster Mash" might show up around Halloween. A 40k arena event needs to happen. We still haven't set up any 40k dog fighting things yet.

December is always an awkward month, but perhaps we'll give 500 points a shot then. Maybe not.

January will likely be Doubles again coinciding with the Ork / IG release. Abington will also host it's annual Apocalypse Megabattle.

Plainville is seriously overdue for a league. The Abington guys started a long league just as we began to flesh one out for Plainville. We may give one a go in March, after we have both IG and Orks (if rumors are true).

Abington will also run at least one 40k tournament before the end of the year. Possibly in November.

The criticism is fair, although it's probably not entirely accurate. We do lots of smaller 40k stuff over the course of the year. A very large percentage of it doesn't get posted on Dakka.

If I had more time to dedicate solely to 40k we'd run tons of stuff all the time, that's for sure... Although saturation is an issue.

Anyhow, based on my inbox and the Facebook event there seems to be a very high level of interest in this doubles event we've got coming up. At least 1 team from Montreal is heading down, which is always awesome.

Definitely visit our message boards if you're interested in some of the small, casual, non-tournament events.

Out of curiosity,
what happened to alternating events between Plainville and Abington?

I'm not sure we were ever going to alternate.  Abington will have events but we currently don't have enough terrain for both stores to throw down 15+ tables a piece without having to move stuff back and forth once (or twice) a month.

The terrain Paul made this summer was SUPPOSED to not be used for anything, but obviously Abington needs it.

Abington has been running a league for a while.  Lots of players started.  People that frequent the Abington store almost never attend Plainville events, which tells me that interest level among the community there isn't super high (10/24 players in the 500pt event were Abington guys, 6/27 teams in the last Doubles were Abington teams).  I would imagine Abington would like / benefit from lots of non-tournament events like the examples I gave in my post on Dakka...  The problem is that someone needs to organize them and run them.

I'm going to make an effort to get as much of that stuff done as possible, Jason.  I didn't just say it for flare.

The only issue is that I'll need someone to run / host all of the non-tournament events (and help hammer out rules).  Ben is super busy lately and I can't ask him to work for free all the time any more.  He's more than paid his dues!

Opening up event mechanics related discussion to the community is not a good idea and a lesson I learned not to do a long, long time ago.  :)

We'll get it done.

Terrain points may just be the most concerning of all, but that's always been a bone of contention, surprisingly (or not) the number of casual 40k games is up now there's places to play and terrain!

You're analysis on Plainville attendance is telling, but I'm curious as to what? How was the attendance ratio's across the last 3 events in Abington?

Cheers,
Alan

I think part of the issue at Abington is playspace as well.  If my memory serves there is at most 7 tables in Abington?  so 14 people at most for a singles event - which is why the doubles worked really well because then you can have 14 teams.
0000 - Rest Period - BUT YOU BETTER NOT SPEND FOUR WHOLE HOURS SLEEPING. IF YOU DO YOU ARE NOT ANGRY ENOUGH AND TOMORROW YOU GET THE FIRST CHANCE TO PLAY PIN THE TAU ON THE CARNIFEX.

just teasing you chase, hopefully we can get it all in since all the events sound like fun, not sure what I can do to help out but I'm there for whatever you need.

as to the plainville vs abington issue. Plainville clearly has the advantage in floor space and tables. I've been to the one doubles event in abington had and it was a tight fit for the majority of the tables

I'm glad to hear that 500 pts is your favorite... it's my favorite too!

Where I play: basically I only show up for tourneys or when I'm on my way up to New Hampshire to visit my folks.  I live about 45 mins from both stores, to the south.

I should have been more clear in my post.  The numbers I gave for the 500 pointer and the Doubles were from the only two Abington tournaments in 2013.  The remainder of the attendees were either from Plainville or people that travel to most / all of the events we host.

Still, the turnout for events there has been solid (which is really all that matters).

Makes sense, To be clear, I'm not looking for 1850 crazy competitive situations here, you guys have the corner on that market for sure :)

IMNSHO 500 pointers and doubles are far more suited to the Abington crowd than the tournament practice.

So a few smaller tournaments and doubles would be appreciated, and despite memory issues, expectations were clearly set about the new store having more of these, watching Plainville host these over and over again is bumming out more than a few..
